The 6th edition of the biennial African School of Fundamental Physics and Applications, #ASP2020 will take place on July 5-25, 2020 at Université Cadi Ayyad in Marrakesh, Morocco.
The school session is biennial and focuses Africa taking advantage of local support and considering a uniform exposure for Africa. Previous editions took place in Stellenbosch, South Africa between August 1 and August 21 2010; Kumasi, Ghana between July 15 and August 8 2012; Dakar Senegal between August 3 and August 23 2014, Kigali in Rwanda between August 1 and August 19 2016, and the fifth edition held in Namibia between June 24 and July 14 2018. The 6th edition will be held in Marrakesh, Morocco.
The host country of the school is selected two and a half years in advance through a competitive bidding process that takes into account aspects of safety of the participants and the support from the host country government. The duration of the school session allows for networking and interactions among the participants. Support for the school comes from institutes in Africa, Europe, USA and Asia.
The aim of the school is to build capacity to harvest, interpret, and exploit the results of current and future physics experiments and to increase proficiency in related applications. Learning is based on a close interplay between theoretical, experimental, and applied physics.
The organisers target to train 85 selected students from various African countries, 70 high school teachers from the host country for a one-week teachers’ training workshop, 1500 high school pupils for a one-week outreach, and 60 participants at the ASP conference.
Eligibility:
- The participating students are selected from all over Africa.
- A minimum of 3 years of university education in mathematics, physics, computing and/or engineering.
The ASP activities consist of the following components:
- A 3-week scientific boot camp for 85 students (20 from the host country and 65 international students).
- African Conference on Fundamental Physics and Applications (ACP) organised parallel to the students and teachers activities. It includes talks from invited speakers and independent contributors in various fields.
- A one-week workshop is organised to train 70–80 high school teachers for improved physics teaching.
- A one-week program which consists of an outreach to motivate 1200–1500 high school students to develop and maintain interest in physics.
- A forum that consists of talks, discussions and debate about the role and the future of ASP in capacity development in Africa.
- Post boot-camp continuous mentoring and coaching program to help ASP students.
Full bursaries will be provided to the selected students to cater for travel, accommodation and feeding.
Student applications will open on 15 October 2019 and close on 15 January 2020.
Students will be required to submit the following:
- CV
- Statement of interest
- All university transcripts
- One letter of recommendation from a university advisor
- Student Identification card
