SUMMARY:Monitoring Algal Blooms in the Sandbox with Python Webinar
DESCRIPTION:GeoVille\, in conjunction with Space in Africa\, is organising a webinar titled “Monitoring Algal Blooms the Sandbox (Jupyter Lab) with Python ” on 6th August 2024 at 10:30 AM (UTC+2/ CEST) via Zoom to train users on the Example Notebooks for facilitating sustainable algal ecosystems. Algal blooms are rapid increases in the algae population in aquatic systems\, often resulting in significant ecological\, economic\, and health impacts. These blooms can deplete oxygen in the water\, leading to the death of marine life\, disrupt local fisheries\, and produce toxins that are harmful to humans and wildlife. The western coast of South Africa\, with its rich marine biodiversity and crucial fishing industry\, is particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of algal blooms. \nMonitoring algal blooms is essential for timely intervention and mitigation. Remote sensing technology\, particularly satellite data from missions like Sentinel-3\, provides a powerful tool for tracking these events over large and remote areas. Sentinel-3\, a mission developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the Copernicus Programme\, offers high-resolution optical and infrared data that is well-suited for detecting and monitoring algal blooms. The webinar will encourage you to register for free\, sign in and sync the Example Notebooks. \nDuring this training\, participants will gain access to and learn how to leverage Example Notebooks on the Dunia IT platform\, designed by ESA. Furthermore\, attendees will gain insights into applying EO data for environmental monitoring of marine ecosystems and sustainable water and natural resource management across Africa. \nObjectives \n\nRegister and Sync the Example Notebooks: Participants will go through an example notebook together\, step by step\, ensuring enough time to understand and code it themselves.\nIn this notebook\, we will demonstrate the process of using Sentinel-3 data to monitor algal blooms along the western coast of South Africa.
