The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), under the Access to Space for All Initiative and its partners, provide hands-on opportunities to develop capacity to access space. The initiative is run over a collection of partnerships that are in turn divided into different tracks.
The event series focuses on the Hyper and Micro-gravity track. With a world-class list of speakers from across the global space community, the series will unpack in detail this important area of space science and how the community, under the United Nations umbrella, is coming together in collaboration.
Hypergravity, where the force of gravity exceeds that on the surface of the Earth and microgravity, a minimal gravity forces, like on the International Space Station (ISS), conditions can be used to advance research in biology, medicine, material science and fluid
dynamics.
In this series of webinars, experts from all over the world will be invited to introduce and answer questions about:
- the fundamentals, special characteristics, and advantages of Hypergravity/Microgravity environment
- overview of what type or research can be done in Hypergravity/Microgravity and its applications
- overview of available modified gravity platforms; areas of application and benefits
- how to develop an experiment to be conducted in Hypergravity/Microgravity including; tests and procedures
- overview of the available experiment opportunities and existing networks/experts
In the Hypergravity/Microgravity Track, there are opportunities to conduct experiments through a range of programmes which includes:
- DropTES with the Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Space Administration utilizing the Bremen Drop Tower;
- HyperGES with the European Space Agency (ESA) utilizing the Large Diameter
Centrifuge Facility; - Bartolomeo with Airbus utilizing the Columbus module Bartolomeo external platform of the International Space Station (ISS);
- China Space Station with the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) utilizing both
internal and external platforms of the to-be-built China Space Station; - The Dream Chaser with Sierra Nevada Corporation utilizing the Dream Chaser space vehicle.
Details of the webinar series:
- The webinars will be conducted on Microsoft Teams. They will be recorded and posted on the UNOOSA website along with the presentation material.
- The series will run each week, every Wednesday, from April 21 to June 16. To reach different time zones, each webinar will have two sessions; one from 10:30 CEST and the other from 16:30 CEST. Speakers may differ in each session.
- Registration will be needed for each webinar. Registration links are provided on the UNOOSA website, and the Microsoft Teams invitation links will only be sent to people who have registered.
- The webinars’ target audience includes students, professors, researchers, scientists and engineers from various fields interested in R&D in hypergravity/microgravity environments and representatives of countries interested in promoting these opportunities, information and knowledge to their respective countries/regions.
