The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is recruiting an Operations Astronomer on a permanent contract to its facility at Krugersdorp, Gauteng. The successful applicant will be responsible for operating the single dish and VLBI operations, conducting research and supervising junior researchers.
Key Responsibilities
- Scheduling daily single-dish operations and maintaining calibration activities;
- Single dish instrumentation and techniques by designing, testing and integrating the replacement spectral-line correlator;
- VLBI operations by assisting with both Astronomical (primarily) and Geodetic (secondarily) VLBI Operations;
- Supervision and training post-graduate Astronomy Students and post-doctoral researchers;
- Conduct Scientific research and foster scientific collaboration; and
- Publish peer-reviewed articles and publish and present them in a non-peer-reviewed environment.
Key Requirements
Qualification
- PhD in Physics, Astronomy or related field;
- Three years’ post-doctoral experience in observations in astronomy;
- Proven record of publications in refereed journals; and
- Astronomy publication record.
Experience
- Lecturing experience;
- Experience in reducing Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) / single-disk data; and
- Experience programming in C / Python
Knowledge
- Knowledge of Radio telescope operations experience; and
- Knowledge of astronomy software development.
