SARAO is Hiring an Operations Astronomer

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is recruiting an Operations Astronomer on a permanent contract to its facility at Krugersdorp, Gauteng. The successful applicant will be responsible for operating the single dish and VLBI operations, conducting research and supervising junior researchers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Scheduling daily single-dish operations and maintaining calibration activities;
  • Single dish instrumentation and techniques by designing, testing and integrating the replacement spectral-line correlator;
  • VLBI operations by assisting with both Astronomical (primarily) and Geodetic (secondarily) VLBI Operations;
  • Supervision and training post-graduate Astronomy Students and post-doctoral researchers;
  • Conduct Scientific research and foster scientific collaboration; and
  • Publish peer-reviewed articles and publish and present them in a non-peer-reviewed environment.
Key Requirements
Qualification
  • PhD in Physics, Astronomy or related field;
  • Three years’ post-doctoral experience in observations in astronomy;
  • Proven record of publications in refereed journals; and
  • Astronomy publication record.
Experience
  • Lecturing experience;
  • Experience in reducing Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) / single-disk data; and
  • Experience programming in C / Python
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Radio telescope operations experience; and
  • Knowledge of astronomy software development.

  • Extensive IT skills; and
  • Scientific writing;
