The NewSpace company, based in South Africa, predominantly focuses on excelling in the operational constellation market.

The South African upstream company is hiring an electronics design engineer and a quality controller.

1. Electronic Design Engineer

KEY PURPOSE OF JOB

NewSpace Systems is a product development and manufacturing aerospace engineering company in Somerset West. We have a permanent position for a design engineer to take responsibility for new electro-mechanical product design, development and verification on various projects working within a multidisciplinary team.

KEY TASKS

  • Design and develop electronics-based products used in spacecraft related systems and their associated design documentation, test procedures and calibration systems:
  • Attending requirement and proposal discussions with clients when required.·
  • Derive technical specifications for system requirements based on market and/or Customer needs.
  • Research, develop and testing of theoretical and conceptual designs.
  • Derive component requirements for the electronic design using traceable and qualified components.
  • Simulate/test the design at various levels, ensuring that a product will work with adequate design margins and perform reliably and consistently in specified operating environments.
  • Documentation and review of all aspects during design phases.
  • Design and develop embedded firmware for microcontroller and FPGA based applications.
  • Testing of hardware and firmware, implementing corrections as necessary.
  • Interacting with sub-contractors and resolving manufacturing issues.
  • Development of production documentation
  • Other ad-hoc duties as required by the company.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • B.Sc/B.Eng degree in electronic engineering from a recognized institution
  • Experience (ideally within the aerospace or defence industry):
  • High-reliability electronic product design and realisation
  • Analog and digital electronic circuit design and simulation
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout (using any EDA software)
  • Practical experience testing and debugging electronic circuits
  • Software and/or firmware development (Python, C, C++)

Additional knowledge areas that would strengthen the application:

  • Master’s degree from a recognized institution
  • Experience with power electronics design and optimization (emphasis on power conversion systems)
  •  HDL design and development for FPGA systems
  • Familiarity with microcontroller architectures (PIC, ARM, AVR, etc.)
  • Familiarity with embedded communication systems and standards (CAN, RS422, SPI, I2C, UART, etc.)
  • Familiarity with control theory and the implementation/realization thereof
  • Experience with software-designed radio (SDR) systems
  • Experience with COTS, automotive, industrial, and military electronic components
  • Experience working with optical/optomechanical systems
  • Electromagnetic design and analysis
  • Familiarity with CAD software and design principles

2. Quality Controller

KEY PURPOSE OF JOB

  • Ensure all processes are carried out to the required quality to ensure delivered items are fit for purpose and meet the technical and client requirements and expectations.
  • Maintaining, reviewing, and improving product and quality assurance for Space-related activities within the facility.
  • Maintaining quality and operational procedures established as part of the formal qualification and acceptance processes.   

KEY TASKS

Quality Control:

  • Understanding the technical and client’s needs and requirements and ensure effective communication thereof to the engineering and production teams.
  • Inspection of incoming components, parts, and assemblies by conducting visual and measurement tests and rejecting and returning unacceptable deliveries.
  • Identify Key Inspection Points (KIP) and Mandatory Inspection Points (MIP) of sub-assemblies and integrated assemblies and liaison with Engineering and Production teams to ensure inclusion in the product documentation.
  • In-process and final inspection of sub-assemblies and integrated assemblies, including all related build documentation.
  • Perform inspection on outgoing deliveries (to sub-contractors and clients), ensuring that product is in line with technical and client requirements.

Quality Assurance:

  • Assist the Supply Chain team in the selection of suppliers and sub-contractors.
  • Monitor shelf-life control and ensure that timely actions minimise any impact on production and engineering processes.
  • Ensure adherence to cleanroom standards, as per the BMS requirements.
  • Responsible for the effective feedback on quality deviations to Engineering and Production teams to prevent re-occurrence and promote continuous improvement.
  • Responsible for the calibration and maintenance of equipment (internal and sub-contracted) promptly in adherence to the schedule.
  • Responsible for the review and approval of technical documentation requiring a quality signature.
  • Assist the Engineering and Production teams with investigations of failures, where required.

Quality Training:

  • Monitor and ensure the validity of the ESA certification of technicians and quality controllers.
  • Oversee ESA theoretical training (performed by external ESA trainer) and manage the practical examination in collaboration with the ESA trainer.
  • Assist the Quality Assurance Coordinator with quality induction and awareness training, where required.

Administration:

  • Responsible for the effective administration of quality control processes within the company.
  • Keeping accurate documentation and analyse trends.
  • Other ad hoc duties as required by the company.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Grade 12 certificate or equivalent
  • Valid IPC-A-610 or ECSS certificate (Preference will be given to aerospace and defence electronics experience)

Experience & Knowledge:

  • More than five years of working experience in an electronic manufacturing industry
  • Knowledge of workmanship standards
  • Experience with soldering and conformal coating
  • 1-2 years quality control/inspection in the electronic manufacturing industry (Preference will be given to aerospace and defence electronics experience)
  • Proficient with MS Office.
