The IAU Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE), in collaboration with the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO), invites astrophotography enthusiasts to participate in its third educational astrophotography contest.

Astrophotography Categories

Interested participants can submit images in the following categories:

  • Phases of Venus;
  • day arcs of the Sun and solar graphs, sunrise and sunset location over the year; and
  • Photos of any astronomical object taken exclusively with smartphones/mobile devices.

Furthermore, time-lapse videos can be submitted in the category Rotation of the Big Dipper or Southern Cross.

Prizes

There will be six winning entries in the Still images with smartphones category, and the winners will be awarded USD 109 (EUR 100) each. In addition, there will be three winning entries in each category. In these categories, cash prizes of USD 822 (EUR 750), USD 548 (EUR 500), and USD 274 (EUR 250) will be awarded to the first, second, and third-place entries, respectively.

Benefits

All winning entries will be published in the OAE’s astronomy education resources collection and the IAU Image Archive under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) 4.0 International Licence. In addition, participants are encouraged to allow OAE to publish their images and videos under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license even if they don’t receive a prize, as long as the jury considers the photos and videos highly educational.

Furthermore, their images will be available as Open Educational Resources for teachers and learners worldwide. In addition, all participating photographers will still retain the copyright to their images.

How to Apply

Entries must be submitted through this form by 30 June 2023 at noon CET. In addition, submissions will be evaluated by an international panel of astrophotographers and astronomy educators, who will consider the aesthetic and technical qualities of the images and the educational value of each entry in the context of primary and secondary school teaching.
