The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) is recruiting a Researcher with a focus on helio-physics to join its space science programme in Hermanus, Western Cape. Reporting to the Science Research and Applications Manager, the successful candidate will undertake cutting-edge research in space science, train postgraduate students, and build a distinguished research track record whilst contributing to growing knowledge and developing applications within SANSA.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate must possess:
- PhD in Space Science, Space Physics, Applied Mathematics, or Engineering
- 3-5 years’ experience in a research position
- Excellent research track record demonstrating the ability to conduct independent research, with a strong preference for helio-physics (space weather and solar physics would be an added advantage)
- Peer-reviewed publications, preferably as first author
- Experience in delivering lectures and seminars
- Participation in science advancement activities, with a preference for postgraduate student supervision
- Programming skills, preferably in Python
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Desirable Attributes
Preference will be given to candidates with:
- Skill sets and research fields that advance SANSA’s operational space weather ambitions
- Experience in MHD (magnetohydrodynamics) modelling
- Established or potential research contacts across Africa
- NRF (National Research Foundation) rating
