The Centre for Space Research at North-West University in collaboration with other partners announces a call for registration for the African Radio Interferometry Winter School. The Winter School will be held at NWU Campus in Potchefstroom, South Africa, the week of 23 to 29 June 2019.
The school is jointly organized by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRF/SARAO), the Centre for Space Research at North-West University and the UC Berkeley SETI Research Centre. It is also partly supported by the Jumping JIVE (Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC), Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (DARA) and Development through Radio Astronomy Global Network (DRAGN), according to an email from the Local Organizing Committee.
Thematic Areas:
The one-week winter school will focus on the introduction of MeerKAT and radio astronomy research while expanding on the following topics:
- Flagging, calibration and imaging of continuum and spectral line data;
- Time domain pulsar sciences and an introduction to transients searches and SETI;
- Extracting information from astronomical data and interpreting the results;
- Introducing new pipeline and automated software for radio astronomy data processing;
- Hands-on projects to challenge participants’ problem-solving skills.
Participation and Eligibility:
The intended audience are postgraduate students, post-docs and scientists/professionals.
Participants planning to attend the workshop must note that having a personal laptop for practical work is required. Datasets and software will be provided for downloaded. Processing of data should be done on these laptops to allow participants to take the results with them after the workshop as examples.
Prior knowledge of astronomy research is not required. It is however essential that participants have some experience with using Linux, possess basic Python programming skills and have a well-defined mathematical base.
Funding and travel support:
The organisers have limited available funding to assist with travel and accommodation cost for selected participants.
