Apply for the Postdoctoral Position in Theoretical Relativistic Astrophysics at ARC

The Astrophysics Research Centre (ARC) at the School of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal, is offering a postdoctoral position in theoretical relativistic astrophysics, focusing on neutron stars and pulsars. Candidates with prior experience in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  • Physics of neutron stars;
  • Nuclear matter of the core/crust;
  • Transport properties of dense matter;
  • Magnetic field evolution of neutron stars; and
  • Pulsar magnetosphere.

Furthermore, the successful applicant will be expected to engage in full-time postdoctoral studies under the supervision of a member or members of the academic staff in ARC and will work closely with the research group and provide research assistance on various related projects; undertake literature surveys, develop theoretical models, and assist with the supervision of postgraduate activities.

Requirements
  • PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics/Physics obtained no more than five years before the starting date of the appointment;
  • Must be based at UKZN Westville campus for the duration of the scholarship;
  • An adequate number of good publications in the relevant area of expertise;
  • Knowledge and experience in the field of theoretical relativistic astrophysics; and
  • The successful applicant will be expected to engage in full-time postdoctoral studies under the supervision of a member or members of the academic staff in ARC.

  • A detailed CV including a list of publications;
  • Contact details for two referees;
  • A copy of the applicant’s doctoral degree certificate or PhD award letter; and
  • A certified copy of the applicant’s ID / permanent residency document/foreigners must own relevant permits.
