Apply to Attend The 2020 Science For Development Workshop in Cape Town, South Africa

The 2020 Science For Development Workshop is jointly hosted by the International Science Council’s (ISC) Regional Office for Africa (ROA) and the International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD), both supported by the Department of Science and Innovation and National Research Foundation.

This workshop which will hold from 30-31 January 2020 at South African Astronomical Observatory, Cape Town, South Africa, will be open to participants from all over the world but with specific interest and focus on Africa. Specific invitations will be based on desktop studies of the field of “science for development”. A maximum of 80 participants is envisaged.

The Science For Development Workshop is set to:

● Bring together experts from both science and development fields, especially from across Africa, in an atmosphere where they can freely discuss and find common grounds regarding socio-economic development.
● Stimulate collaborations and partnerships between scientists and development experts or practitioners.
● Generate ideas and plans for interdisciplinary science-for-development projects, which could be incubated/piloted within the OAD or ROA networks, and potentially expanded globally.

Participants are welcomed from the following fields/organisations (non-exhaustive list):

  1. Natural Sciences (Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc)
  2. Social Sciences (Anthropology, Political science, Psychology, Philosophy, etc)
  3. Humanities
  4. Development economics
  5. Non-governmental and non-profit development organisations
  6. Researchers in development finance
  7. Business administration, leadership, and corporate governance
  8. Government officials and policymakers
  9. Commercial industry etc

A limited number of travel support grants will be offered for well-motivated applications, but participants will generally be expected to make their travel arrangements. Also, there will be no registration fee.
