The African Astronomical Society (AfAS), in collaboration with the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE) and the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA), is organising the African Regional SHAW-IAU Workshop on Astronomy for Education from 3 – 5 October 2023 at the South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town, South Africa.
The workshop, centred around the theme of Astronomy Education in Africa, offers an excellent opportunity to promote the potential of astronomy in formal education, specifically in primary and secondary schools. It aims to empower teachers to become catalysts for African Astronomy Ambassadors within their schools, inspiring and motivating students to explore the wonders of the Universe. Furthermore, the workshop will serve as a platform for National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAECs) and science engagement specialists (such as science centres, planetariums, museums, etc.) to showcase their astronomy education initiatives, encouraging and inspiring others to follow suit.
This workshop will provide teachers with a valuable opportunity to enhance their knowledge of astronomy, acquire fresh and innovative teaching approaches, and actively participate in workshops featuring hands-on activities that will boost their confidence in teaching astronomy.
