Dragonfly Aerospace (DF) is recruiting a mechanical and thermal engineer. The successful candidate will join the team at the facility in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa to lead the design, development and qualification of thermal engineering solutions to meet the needs mandated by product owners, clients and stakeholders to achieve outputs that meet validated requirements.
Job Description
The Thermal Engineer is responsible for performing mechanical services following the required company and departmental management standards efficiently, proactively and synergistically. All Thermal solutions within the organisation are to be produced per the standards the Thermal Centre of Excellence (COE) set out. The COE sets out its required standards for, amongst others, Thermal engineering principles, creating system tools, procedures, best practices and product/technology roadmaps.
Thermal solutions are produced for Space and Ground segments of spacecraft engineering, including development for product lifecycle flight hardware models, ground support equipment, testing tools and jigs, and, generally, the required creating systems.

- B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering

Skills:
- Coordination;
- Finite element method;
- Experience in the field of thermal-vacuum testing;
- Product lifecycle management;
- Technical & peer reviews;
- Validation & verification;
- Engineering change management;
- Non-conformances, root cause analyses, waivers, deviations etc; and
- Building a knowledge base for thermal engineering capabilities.
Experience:
- 8+ Years of experience in the field;
- Languages; English is essential and Afrikaans highly advantageous.
Job Responsibilities
- Knowledge of thermodynamics, design MLI and heat balance (generated, absorbed, radiation);
- Judgement and decision making, critical thinking;
- Orbital mechanics (beta angle, inclination, illumination etc.);
- Involvement at all stages of the mechanical development cycle, including designing, developing and improving systems and QA processes as required;
- Development of mechanical verification plans, test procedures and test environments, executing the test procedures and documenting test results to ensure mechanical system requirements are met;
- Deliver high-quality designs on time as part of a team;
- Perform and continuously improve the core competency of the Mechanical Team;
- Monitor and report to management on plans, progress and issues;
- Provide technical leadership for Mechanical Design within projects;
- Support and development, selection, tailoring and deployment of mechanical design processes, tools and metrics as required;
- Produce in compliance with the company product lifecycle management (PLM) standards and procedures, tailored where applicable and as approved by the project;
- Ensure the practice and adherence to the organisation’s system engineering standards (e.g. needs solicitation, requirements analysis/writing/management, product lifecycle management, reviews, traceability, validation, verification, non-conformances, waivers and others);
- Work closely with other engineering disciplines and project managers within an integrated, cross-functional team environment;
- Support project and business development on formulating and compiling statements of work, technical solution plans, pre-feasibility and trade studies and system concept proposals;
- Support implementation of and compliance with engineering technical standards, policies and procedures while establishing and mitigating technical risk;
- Produce and submit deliverables for technical review and baselining;
- Perform, as required, technical considerations according to the technical review process;
- Lead environmental tests (specifically mechanical vibration) as and when required; and
- Perform other roles as per agreed assignments in the Engineering RASCI (Responsibility, Accountability, Support, Consult and Informed) assignment matrix.
