The Leiden/ESA Astrophysics Program for Summer Students (LEAPS) 2021 is open for applications.

LEAPS is an opportunity for students with an interest in astronomy and astrophysics to perform a 10-week summer research project in collaboration with a research scientist from Leiden Observatory or ESA. The program is open to all students NOT currently engaged in a PhD program but enthusiastic about research in astrophysics.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding travel restrictions amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the LEAPS 2021 program will be virtual.

Students will be selected for the program based on their academic achievements and research potential and will be matched to staff projects based on what they indicate their scientific interests to be. Research at Leiden Observatory and ESA takes place on a diverse array of topics, these were the 2020 projects, and student projects will likely consist of anything from the analysis of data from world-class telescopes, to large computer simulations, to hands-on work in the astrochemistry laboratories.

For the 2021 program, up to two LEAPS studentships will be awarded to students from developing countries and funded by the J. Mayo Greenberg Scholarship Prize. In memory of the distinguished pioneering Leiden astrophysicist, Professor J. Mayo Greenberg. According to Leiden University, Students from developing countries will automatically be considered for the J. Mayo Greenberg Scholarship Prize.

Students accepted into the LEAPS program will be provided with travel costs to/from Leiden. We will also provide housing accommodations near the observatory, as well as a modest stipend to help with living costs during the internship.

Applications will be made through the web submission form and only fully completed submissions received by February 28, 2021, 23:59 CET, will receive full consideration.

The questions include selecting two projects from the list provided that one is most interested in working on. The submission page requires the creation of a username and password, and one is also required to submit the following documents in PDF format:

  • A one-page document describing one’s research interests
  • A transcript with grades
  • An optional curriculum vitae

You will be asked to provide details of one person who can provide a letter of reference. Please see the FAQ for more information.

Once you have submitted your application or saved a draft version, an email will be sent to your reference letter writer requesting the letter. Students will be evaluated for participation in the program on the basis of their research potential and match to available projects in their area(s) of interest.
