The Pan-African School for Emerging Astronomers (PASEA) has announced its call for applications for its fifth edition. Formerly known as the West African International Summer School for Young Astronomers (WAISSYA), it is an innovative short course in astronomy for African university students and high school teachers. Furthermore, a global collaboration of astronomers using educational research principles design and teach the programme.

The biannual programme will hold this year in Livingstone, Zambia, from 10 to 14 October 2022. Furthermore, the curriculum will include topics including Stars, Galaxies, Linux fundamentals, Python programming, and astronomy data reduction, among others.

PASEA 2022 will receive applications (post-graduates and under-graduates applicants) from different African countries. The programme will also receive applications beyond Africa, as was the case during the WAISSYA 2019 edition. However, the organisers will ensure appropriate representation in terms of nationality and gender.

Registration for PASEA 2022 began on 15 July 2022 and will close on 7 August 2022. As such, interested persons can apply by visiting here or here. The programme is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, graduates from the faculty of sciences, engineering and high school science teachers. The organisers also encourage all to apply, especially women. In addition, you can send an email to paseacollaboration@gmail.com or pcs200800@gmail.com for enquiries. Alternatively, you can call +260 97 7704168.

The school’s design allows African science students to further develop their interest in astronomy, inspire their scientific curiosity, and enhance their practices of scientific thinking. In addition, it enables instructors to exchange educational ideas between Africa and North America/Europe. The most recent school was held between 21 October – 1 November 2019 at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Abuja, Nigeria.

PASEA already has 250 alumni, many of whom are teaching science or attending graduate school in astronomy or related fields. Furthermore, PASEA’s design is such that it rotates between countries in Africa. This ensures that many African students can receive exposure to Astronomy.
