The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) will be conducting a webinar on the impact of space weather research on South Africa on 2 August 2021 during the National Science Week event, which will be held from 1-7 August 2021.
This webinar and panel discussion will cover how blue‐sky research help to mitigate the effects of space weather and its impact on technology and how forecasting will save the country millions in economic benefits. The webinar will feature presentations from the SARCHI Research Chair in Space Weather, Dr Martin Snow, and SANSA Space Weather Practitioner, Dr Mpho Tshisaphungo. A panel discussion with the presenters and three SANSA researchers involved in space weather research, Dr John Bosco Habarulema, Dr Rendani Nndanganeni and Dr Tshimangadzo Matamba will follow the presentations.
A Q&A session will inform the panel discussion with the audience.
National Science Week (NSW) is an annual event aiming to exhibit and communicate awareness in science. It is an initiative of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), a countrywide celebration of science involving various stakeholders and role players conducting science-based activities during the week. The NSW 2021 will be conducted under the theme “Making it possible through science”.
The objectives of celebrating the NSW 2021 under the theme mentioned above are to:
- Illustrate the role of science in tackling problems and challenges encountered in creating and sustaining a prosperous society;
- Demystify the myths surrounding some of the innovations that are important to the advancement of society;
- Display that South Africa is a home of some discoveries and innovations that influence the world; and
- Raise science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) career awareness.
