The National Research Foundation / South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRF/SARAO) is recruiting for multiple positions. These positions include a Senior System Engineer and System Engineer.

Senior System Engineer

This is a permanent role. The successful candidate will join the NRF/SARAO team in Cape Town. In addition, the successful applicant will be responsible for all systems engineering elements of design and development through to integration, test & verification for sub-systems and systems with high criticality, the baselines and design configuration of the system under development, including leading and managing engineering changes to the baselines, and contribute to strategic leadership within programmes and SARAO through experience-based inputs and conceptual/ strategic thinking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the definition of architectures and solutions derived from vague or abstract requirements;
  • Lead teams in the planning and execution of assembly, integration and verification of complex systems, both in the laboratory and in the field;
  • Provide field engineering services for telescopes and sub-systems to aid in fault diagnostics and rectification;
  • Review and integrate multiple activity reports into system-level analysis and reports to ensure the quality and integrity of results and recommendations within uncertain contexts;
  • Coach or mentor up to five young engineers in the field of engineering and specifically systems engineering;
  • Use their experience to employ innovative and unique methods and techniques to improve the efficiency and integrity of the systems engineering outcomes; and
  • Contribute to and advance organisational maturity through leading the development and implementation of engineering processes within their realm of responsibility.

Key Requirements

Qualification:

  • B.Eng/B.Sc (Eng) with 9+ years; OR
  • M.Eng with 7+ years; OR
  • PhD/D.Eng with 5+ years

Experience:

  • Advanced applied Systems Engineering across the complete lifecycle of a system or product, at all levels of the system’s hierarchy;
  • Integration, test and verification of complex systems;
  • Baseline establishment and management;
  • Engineering change control;
  • Hi-tech product development;
  • Use of Computer-aided systems engineering tools like CORE;
  • CSEP accreditation will be an advantage;
  • Development of systems engineering processes and procedures; and
  • Coaching and mentoring.

Knowledge:

  • Acknowledged in-depth knowledge of systems engineering, technology and software, based on theoretical aspects and experience in systems engineering methods, procedures, tools and techniques;
  • Configuration management and configuration management systems;
  • Systems Engineering Standards, e.g. ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 & 15289, ISO/IEC/IEEE 26702, ANSI/EIA-632;
  • Quality assurance systems (ISO 9001); and
  • Knowledge of the PFMA and related procurement regulations.

System Engineer

This is also a permanent role, and the successful candidate will work with the NRF/SARAO team in Cape Town, Western Cape. The successful candidate will be responsible for systems engineering over multiple lifecycle phases with a strong ability to address the speciality engineering and “ilities” of systems design for sub-systems and systems with medium criticality. Furthermore, they will plan and execute the assembly, integration and verification of complicated systems in the laboratory and field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establishing baselines and design configurations, including preparing and implementing engineering changes to the baselines;
  • Performing detailed engineering analysis and synthesis of alternative solutions derived from unclear or vague specifications;
  • Provide field engineering services after delivery to aid in fault diagnostics and rectification;
  • Coaching or mentoring one or more young engineers in the field of engineering and specifically systems engineering;
  • Participate in work teams focused on project or programme planning and strategic decision-making; and
  • Contribute to organisational maturity by maintaining and upgrading engineering processes within their realm of responsibility.

Key Requirements

Qualification:

  • B.Eng/B.Sc (Eng) with 4+ years; OR
  • M.Eng with 3+ years; OR
  • PhD/D.Eng with 1+ years

Experience:

  • Integration, test and verification of complicated systems;
  • Applied Systems Engineering across the multiple lifecycle stages of a system or product at all levels up to user systems (L5) of the system’s hierarchy;
  • Use of Computer-aided Systems Engineering Tools such as CORE;
  • Application and control of systems engineering processes and procedures;
  • Baseline establishment and management; and
  • Change control.

Knowledge:

  • Recognised domain knowledge of systems engineering, technology and software, based on theoretical aspects and experience in systems engineering methods, procedures, tools and techniques;
  • Configuration management systems;
  • Systems Engineering Standards, e.g. ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 & 15289;
  • Quality assurance systems (ISO 9001); and
  • Knowledge of the PFMA and related procurement regulations.
