The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is looking to employ a facilities manager The incumbent will be responsible for managing SARAO non-instrumentation facilities that are leased and owned in Gauteng Observatory to ensure that SARAO functions effectively and efficiently. In addition, the supervisor will provide a single point of entry for the coordination of all services relating to the efficient and effective running of Gauteng relative facilities, including the implementation of local Gauteng facilities management plan. Furthermore, the successful applicant will manage sustainability issues while reducing the impact on Safety, Environment, Health and Security; and be responsible for housekeeping.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage all facilities leased and owned;
  • Management of contractors and suppliers;
  • Manage tenants and leases;
  • Working alongside housekeeping;
  • Administrative duties, including supply chain management.
Key Requirements
Qualification
  • ND: Office Management, Facilities Management, Business Management, Property Management or related field;
  • Driver’s license;
  • Trade qualification (advantageous);
  • Four years relevant working experience in facilities maintenance;
  • One year working experience as facilities maintenance supervisor or facilities.
Experience
  • Procurement within a Preferential Management Framework Act environment;
  • Front-facing client experience;
  • Proven ability to work independently and within a team;
  • Proven ability to operate under pressure;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Be available after hours and standby for emergencies;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills;
  • Communication skills, written and verbal;
  • Project and contracting management skills and experience in the public sector;
  • Willingness to learn, solve problems and assist team members;
  • Bids and Tenders.
Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of machinery such as generators, vehicles, air conditioners, electrical, sprinklers, fire equipment, plumbing, biometrics and construction etc.;
  • Knowledge of air-conditioning/refrigeration system;
  • Strong leadership and management skills;
  • Understanding of South African construction industry legislation;
  • Knowledge of public sector supply chain management legislation;
  • The incumbent shall have a general understanding of facilities security and safety;
  • The incumbent shall have a basic knowledge of health and safety regulations, particularly where it concerns facilities maintenance and previous first aid and safety officer training.
Qualities
  • Knowledge of fire breaks;
  • Understanding of housekeeping;
  • Sound knowledge of generating, maintaining, and managing contracts and SLA’s;
  • Soft and Technical skills in a property and facilities management environment;
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
