SARAO is Recruiting a Configuration Manager

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is recruiting a Configuration Manager to its facility in Cape Town, Western Cape. Primarily, the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering Configuration Management functions following the agreed processes and procedures. In addition, the incumbent shall report to the “Manager: Information and Risk” and ensure that the functionary provides value-added services to all relevant internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish and administer the Configuration Management System (CMS) for SARAO, ensuring that all users are enabled to use and access the CMS tool;
  • Write and maintain/update the configuration management procedures documentation for SARAO, in line with the ISO 9001 procedures and SARAO system engineering management plan;
  • Provide CM training to all users and stakeholders regularly, and ensure that all parties understand CM in SARAO;
  • Represent, or delegate as appropriate, the configuration management functionary on relevant consortia and working groups that may be established, as may be applicable;
  • Liaise with stakeholders regarding capturing of all project documentation in the CMS;
  • Develop, and ensure utilisation by internal stakeholders, CM document templates;
  • Undertake regular audits of the CMS;
  • Liaise with system engineering and project management on product breakdown structure(s) (PBS) that is clear and accurate; and
  • Change management implementation and management of Engineering Change Proposal (ECP) and change notes (CNs).
Key Requirements
Qualification
  • National Diploma in an engineering or project management related discipline
Experience
  • Five (5) years of experience in a configuration management role within high-tech engineering, product development environment;
  • Use of Enterprise Bridge (eB) or similar CM software package;
  • Proficiency in the use and implementation of the generic CM life cycle; and
  • System engineering processes
Knowledge
  • Understanding of some of these protocols: UDP, SNMP, SMTP, PGP, SFTP, SSH, IPSec, VPN, LDAP, HTTP, SSL/TLS, PKI and DNS;
  • Understanding of LAN, WAN, VLANs, VM, IP Tables and End-Point security;
  • Knowledge of operating systems such as Windows, macOS and Linux;
  • Troubleshooting techniques, helpdesk and end-user support; and
  • Knowledge of DevOps & DevSecOps practices, logs monitoring & security events analysis.
Additional Notes
  • Have a good understanding of configuration management best practices and tools;
  • Have a positive services-oriented attitude and customer approach;
  • Good problem-solving skills;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a variety of different stakeholders;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Delivery orientated with an ability to meet deadlines;
  • Be thorough and meticulous; and
  • Be able to work outside regular hours and have the ability to operate under pressure.
