Science Advancement Manager Position Available at SANSA

The South African National Space Agency seeks a science advancement manager with experience in Science Education. Reporting to the Managing Director, the incumbent will provide appropriate science advancement services and support for SANSA while managing all aspects of the Hermanus, Science Advancement Unit (SAU). The SAU includes the management of the SANSA Science Centre, and the SANSA mobile lab.

Duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • School Science Support Programme
    • Develop curriculum material for STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematic Students) learners and educators.
    • Present programme to learners and educators.
    • Liaise with subject advisors and district officials to ensure programme alignment and focus.
  • Human Capital Development and Outreach
    • Develop science engagement programme for tertiary students, schools and the general public to create awareness of SANSA
    • Engage with relevant stakeholders to plan for tours of the facility for visiting schools, academia, etc.
    • Conduct surveys to determine learner career choices.
    • Establish partnerships with other scientific institutions, academic institutions, environmental affairs to partner on events.
    • Actively participate in the development and implementation of the SANSA Science Advancement Strategy.
  • Public Engagement Programmes
    • Prepare for science festivals and events by ensuring resources and speakers are arranged.
    • Conduct presentations at science festivals and events.
    • Arrange, conduct and coordinate weekly public tours and annual open days.
    • Collaborate with other SANSA divisions to participate in and present at science festivals and events.
  • Unit Management including strategic management and grant applications
    • Provide input into the Space Science Programme’s strategic plan and the operation plan pertaining to the area of responsibility.
    • Participate in the Space Science Programme’s management meetings.
    • Contribute to SANSA wide initiatives.
    • People management within the assigned unit.
    • Implementation of strategic and/or operational decisions pertaining to area of responsibility.
    • Report on the progress and achievement of the key performance areas pertaining to area of responsibility.
    • Participate in volunteer and intern programmes in collaboration with funders.
    • Manage science centre assets and facility including the SANSA space lab.
    • Apply for funding for science advancement programmes and initiatives.
    • Manage all related funding requirements and responsibilities including on-time reporting and adherence to funding rules.
    • Compile and manage the budget and financial requirements for all SAU activities including procurement.
    • Prepare adequate reports on Science Advancement activities as required.
  • Stakeholder Management
    • Keep stakeholders (e.g. Schools, Education District Officials, DST, and SAASTA) up to date on progress with projects.
    • Manage relationships with strategic partnerships.
    • Engage with stakeholders in creating awareness of SANSA capabilities and programmes.
    • Provide information to communications about new developments in the area of expertise

 Eligibility

The ideal candidate will have:

  • BSc Education and Honour’s Degree in Science Education
  • 8 – 10 years’ experience in science education with at least 5 years of management experience
  • Experience with grant management (writing proposals, adhering to grant rules, budgeting) is essential
  • Willingness to travel, including traveling to rural areas
  • Keen problem solving and analytical thinking skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Excellent verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision
