On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the 2023 African Astronomical Society Annual Conference (AfAS-2023), AfAS cordially invites interested institutions and organisations to sponsor and be an official exhibitor at AfAS-2023, to be held at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, from 13 – 17 March 2023.
In line with AfAS’s objectives and science strategy, the third AfAS annual conference will again focus on the science, outreach, communication, and education activities emanating from Astronomy in Africa. In addition, it will seek to enhance further collaborations among African countries and the rest of the world.
Furthermore, it will also focus on the status of astronomy infrastructure, the International Astronomical Union General Assembly taking place in Cape Town in 2024 (IAU-GA2024), AfAS and IAU-GA2024 flagship projects, astronomy for development, and initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining youth in astronomy and strengthening existing activities in the field.
The conference will be organised with the involvement of all the AfAS committees and project partners, including the African Planetarium Association (APA), the African Science Stars Publication (ASSAP), the African-European Radio Astronomy Platform (AERAP), the Office of Astronomy for Development (IAU-OAD) and Wits Centre for Astrophysics.
The AfAS-2023 conference is hybrid, with about 100 participants attending physically and about 200 people attending virtually. Participants include astronomers, policymakers, funders, researchers, outreach officers, and educators from countries across Africa and the diaspora. The conference will focus on the science, outreach, communication, and education activities emanating from Astronomy in Africa and seek to enhance further collaborations among African countries and the rest of the world.
