The Rwanda Space Agency (RSA) has partnered with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (German Corporation for International Cooperation or IGZ) to facilitate a tuition-free open machine learning training programme for the use of geographical data. This is happening through a joint initiative named “FAIR FOWARD- Artificial Intelligence for all.“ This is a project of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) which focuses on Artificial Intelligence development. The project has a footprint in Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, Ghana, Kenya, India and Indonesia. Moreover, it was jointly developed by the University of Rwanda’s Center for Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (GIS) and Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa).
The training programme will upskill data science students and working professionals using machine learning for earth observation. Participants will develop machine learning for earth observation (ML4EO) project proposals and business proposals with the opportunity to obtain funding based on merit. This will aid in solving the problem of a need for more skills and relevant data in measuring changes in natural and managed resources (crops, forests and water bodies). Furthermore, this will aid in creating a vibrant geospatial system in Rwanda.
