Climate Change Al Global is a nonprofit organisation that catalyses impactful work at the intersection of climate change and machine learning. The organisation is inviting applicants with a background in artificial intelligence or a climate-related field to participate in the summer school programme. The programme aims to facilitate multi-disciplinary cooperation across different fields and foster networking in the space.
The programme takes place in two forms; an open to all virtual programme from June to August 2023. The other format will be an in-person event, which will take place from August 14 to 18, 2023, in Montreal, Canada.
For the registration link to the virtual programme, click here. The registration deadline for the virtual programme is yet to be confirmed. In addition, to access the registration link to the in-person programme, click here. The registration deadline will be January 31, 2023, 23:59 AOE (Anywhere on Earth, UTC-12).
Summer School Structure
- Virtual Programme
The virtual programme will provide an overview of how artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) can be used to address climate change. Through lectures and tutorials, participants will learn how AI/ML are employed across different climate-relevant fields/sectors, discuss important considerations for framing/scoping problems, and gain hands-on practice applying AI/ML to climate-relevant problems.
Modules will be presented at varying levels of technical depth. For some modules, substantial knowledge about AI/ML, Python programming, or both is assumed. Only minimal prerequisite knowledge about AI/ML, Python programming, or both are considered for other modules. Individual module prerequisites will be made clear before the summer school, and self-study materials will be sent before the summer school to help participants acquire the background necessary for some of the modules. Everyone who registers for the virtual programme will be able to attend. Participants must be at least 18 years of age.
- In-Person Programme
This edition includes a small (< 50 person) in-person programme for one week from August 14, 2023, to August 18, 2023, at Mila – Quebec AI Institute in Montreal, Canada. The programme’s schedule is yet to be confirmed, but the scheduled time will be from 9 am to 5 pm ET each day.
The in-person programme will allow participants to work on collaborative projects in multi-disciplinary teams. The programme will also have social activities to help build connections between participants.
Applications from students, researchers, engineers, practitioners, and others in the public and private sectors interested in using AI/ML to address problems in climate change mitigation, adaptation, or climate science problems are welcome. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Admission to the in-person programme will be based on a selection process. Accepted applicants can apply for financial assistance to cover some of the costs of attending summer school (lodging, food, and travel). Before accepted participants need to confirm their attendance, the programme organisers will let them know which costs will be covered for everyone and will also let accepted participants know if they have been awarded financial aid.
