Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) benefits are today widely acknowledged SBAS services provisions are expanding globally, driven by the implementation of new SBAS plans worldwide, including the African continent. This reinforces the need for increased coordination to accelerate user adoption and penetration of SBAS services through a multilateral dialogue with aircraft operators and manufacturers, to address the key issue of planning the integration of SBAS in the navigation strategy of all stakeholders to enable airspace users operating in the African airspace to take timely advantage of SBAS safety, efficiency and environmental protection benefits.
In continuation of its efforts to increase awareness of the benefits of implementing SBAS in Africa, the SatNav Africa Joint Programme Office (JPO), in collaboration with the ANGA programme, Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), and Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), will host the 2nd outreach event on SBAS adoption in aviation in Africa.
The event, organised in a hybrid format, will be held in Abuja, Nigeria, on the 2nd and 3rd of February, 2023. The event will also welcome the EU Global Action on Space, an initiative by the European Commission. This event aims to provide a knowledge-sharing platform to support stakeholders’ decision-making in creating synergies to enable the collective reaping of benefits provided by SBAS in the continent, including safety, efficiency and environmental protection benefits.
All the panel discussions will be organised on the sidelines of the SBAS demonstration flights to be held at Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport in Abuja on 1st February 2023 using NAMA’s Beechcraft King Air 350i. These demos will benefit Aviation Stakeholders in the continent as to the capability of SBAS technology in the aviation sector on operational safety, efficiency and environment, which aligns with the vision of NAMA and ASECNA to be one of the leading Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP) in the world.
Furthermore, the event will bring together key stakeholders from the African continent (Civil Aviation Authorities, Air Navigation Service Providers, Airlines, Airports and Airlines Associations), aircraft and avionics manufacturers, pioneers/champion airlines, and members of the international SBAS Interoperability Working Group, on top of numerous key stakeholders from Europe.
