Junior Mechanical Engineer
Dragonfly Aerospace Imaging is hiring a Junior Mechanical Engineer. The successful candidate will join the facility at the Stellenbosch office outside of Cape Town.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and qualification of engineering solutions to meet the needs mandated through product owners, clients, and stakeholders such that it achieves outputs which meet validated requirements;
- Perform mechanical services following the required company and departmental management standards and by providing them in an efficient, proactive and synergistic manner;
- Engage with all stages of the mechanical development cycle, including designing, developing and improving systems and QA processes as required;
- Develop integrated spacecraft mechanical designs while working with suppliers and subsystem providers;
- Utilise mechanical modelling tools to design and build spacecraft mechanical models;
- Maintain and manage spacecraft mechanical balance budgets;
- Support hardware developers in the selection of materials, processes and tests that comply with mechanical design and coordinate mechanical interfaces between spacecraft subsystems;
- Support linking results and output of mechanical models to other modelling and simulation software;
- Assist in establishing and documenting environmental/mechanical engineering and system-level design requirements (e.g. performance, environment, functionality, life, envelope, and integration);
- Manage the required design that meets all physical, mechanical and environmental requirements while ensuring suitable Mechanical control for accommodating the required spacecraft operations and related components (e.g. payload, power, propulsion, communications, onboard computers, AOCS and general avionics);
- Support programme milestone reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, IDR etc.) and Gate Closure;
- Support design non-conformances and resolution during production;
- Provide programme-observed lessons learned to aid in continuous improvement;
- Investigate emerging technologies to develop concepts for future product designs;
- Develop mechanical verification plans, test procedures and test environments, execute the test procedures and document test results to ensure mechanical system requirements are met;
- Deliver high-quality designs on time, as part of a team;
- Participate in estimation planning in an agile environment;
- Perform and continuously improve the core competency of the Mechanical Team;
- Monitor and report to management on plans, progress and issues;
- Technical writing and compilation of technical procedural documents;
- Develop pragmatic solutions without over-engineering;
- Interact and cooperate with customers over applicable to all technical aspects;
- Provide technical leadership for Mechanical Design within projects;
- Support and develop, selection, tailoring, and deployment of mechanical design processes, tools and metrics as required;
- Produce in compliance with the company product lifecycle management (PLM) standards and processes, tailored where applicable and as approved by the project;
- Ensure the practice and compliance to the organisation’s system engineering standards (e.g. needs solicitation, requirements analysis/writing/management, product lifecycle management, reviews, traceability, validation, verification, non-conformances, waivers and others);
- Work closely with other engineering disciplines and project managers within an integrated, cross-functional team environment;
- Support project and business development by formulating and compiling statements of work, technical solution plans, pre-feasibility and trade studies and system concept proposals;
- Support implementation of and compliance with engineering technical standards, policies and procedures;
- Establish, and mitigate technical risk;
- Produce and submit deliverables for technical review and baselining;
- Perform, as required, technical reviews according to the technical review process;
- Facilitate procurement where applicable;
- Lead environmental tests (specifically mechanical vibration) as and when required; and
- Perform further roles as per agreed assignments in the Engineering RASCI (Responsibility, Accountability, Support, Consult and Informed) assignment matrix.
Education/ Qualification Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required while a Master of Engineering (M.Eng) will be an added advantage.
Skills and Experience
- Coordination and finite element method;
- Experience in the field of thermal vacuum testing;
- Product lifecycle management;
- Technical and peer reviews;
- Validation and verification;
- Engineering change management;
- Non-conformances, root cause analyses, waivers, deviations, etc; and
- Building a knowledge base for mechanical engineering capabilities.

Mechanical CAD Draughtsman
Dragonfly Aerospace Imaging is hiring a Mechanical CAD Draughtsman. The successful candidate will join the facility at the Stellenbosch office outside of Cape Town.
Key Responsibilities
- Design mechanical structures and mechanisms as defined by the needs mandated through clients, projects and stakeholders such that it achieves outputs which meet validated requirements;
- Perform CAD designing activities in an efficient, proactive and synergistic manner;
- Design and maintain all CAD models developed within the organisation following the standards as defined by the Mechanical Engineering division or where otherwise approved;
- Design and implement CAD designs while operating according to approved Industry Standards and other standards as defined by its Centres of Excellence (CoE) within which specific aspects, include practices, principles, procedures and supporting structures, amongst others;
- Handle mechanical design (CAD) solutions produced for Space and Ground segments of spacecraft engineering, which includes the development, testing, ground support equipment, assembly & integration and production environments — furthermore, mechanical design solutions are produced per project need and required assignment; and
- Responsible for (performing and contributing towards) a given Centre of Excellence. The organisation’s systems engineering standards are employed on all projects and work assignments.
Education/ Qualification Requirements
- A high school matric certificate is required, as well as the applicable Mechanical CAD certificate.
Skills and Experience
- Two years experience;
- Motion Studies in SolidWorks;
- Clearance Verification in SolidWorks;
- Interference Detection in SolidWorks;
- Bottom-up design method;
- Using all mate types in assemblies;
- Creation part CAD models in Autodesk Inventor;
- Creation assy CAD models in Autodesk Inventor;
- Creation of solid part CAD models in SolidWorks;
- Creation of simple assy CAD models in SolidWorks; and
- Rendering in SolidWorks.
