NewSpace Systems is hiring for the following positions; Space System Engineer, IPC Inspector and Technical Project Manager. The positions are full-time and are in Somerset West, South Africa

Space System Engineer

Key Purpose Of Job

Product development and manufacturing aerospace engineering company in Somerset West has a permanent position for a system engineer to take responsibility for new electro-mechanical product design, development and verification – on various projects and while working within a multidisciplinary team.

Key tasks

Design and develop electronics-based products for use in spacecraft and related systems, together with their associated design documentation, test & qualification procedures, jigs and calibration systems:

  • Act as the Technical Lead during the development phase and as the Design Authority during the life cycle of the system/product;
  • Attend requirements and proposal discussions with clients (external or internal) when required;
  • Derive technical specifications for system requirements based on market and/or Customer needs;
  • Analyse and decompose the system’s mission requirements into mechanical, hardware and software requirements;
  • Research, develop and test theoretical and conceptual designs;
  • Work closely with the Project Manager to plan and manage the integration, qualification and testing activities.

Prerequisites

Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications:
  • B.Sc/B.Eng degree in Electronics/Mechatronics Engineering from a recognized institution.
Experience (within aerospace or defence industry):
  • System engineering of new electronics product development (>3-4 years)
  • High-reliability electronic/electro-mechanic product design and realisation (>5-7 years)
  • Product development for space missions (>3-4 years)
  • Experience with environmental product qualification

Additional knowledge areas that would strengthen the application.

  • Degree in Space Systems Engineering (optimal) or Space Engineering background
  • System engineering degree, training or similar
  • Master’s Degree
  • Electronics design, schematic creation and PCB layout (preferably in Altium Designer)
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD software and design principles (preferably SOLIDWORKS)
  • Software development (Python, C, C++)

Technical Project Manager

Key Purpose of Job

Our product development and manufacturing aerospace engineering company in Somerset West has a permanent position for a Technical Project Manager to develop and manage project schedules, project budgets, and manage customer requirements. The person will also, in conjunction with the Engineering Manager, co-manage the technical solution development with the engineers to achieve the project’s objectives.

Key Tasks

  • Contractual programme/project execution: Proper governance and stakeholder management, governance and stakeholder management output contracting.;
  • Planning: Constraints management and Effective planning aligned to project objectives and key milestones to achieve these objectives, within, schedule and cost requirements
  • Reporting: Timely, and targeted engagement to all relevant stakeholders and ensuring alignment of goals within the business
  • Leadership: Effective team-leading and motivation, that keeps the team focused and inspired and well informed of goals and scope of work at hand
  • Technical: Collaboration with systems engineers and engineering team to ensure technical goals are met effectively to meet the customer requirements of the project, within defined technical constraints

Prerequisites

Qualifications & Experience

Qualification:
  • BSC. Engineering Qualification (Electronic, Mechatronic, Mechanical, Software Engineering)
  • Project Management qualification or formal training
  • System Engineering experience – advantage
Experience & Knowledge:
  • 5-10 years of Project Management experience
  • Experience in managing aerospace or defence product development projects – non-negotiable
  • Experience working within a high technology development environment – non negotiable
  • Managing and leading complex projects with hight technical content
  • Knowledge of PM methodologies

Additional knowledge areas that would strengthen the application

  • Good and effective knowledge of project planning techniques, processes and tools.
  • Good understanding of the project lifecycle and techniques related to controlling outputs of the project.

IPC Inspector 

Key Purpose of Job

  • To ensure all processes are carried out to the required quality to ensure delivered items are fit for purpose and meet the technical and client requirements and expectations.
  • Maintaining, reviewing, and improving product and quality assurance for Space-related activities within the facility.
  • Maintaining quality and operational procedures established as part of the formal qualification and acceptance processes.

Key Tasks

Quality Control:

  • Understanding the technical and client’s needs and requirements and ensure effective communication thereof to the engineering and production teams.
  • Inspection of incoming components, parts, and assemblies by conducting visual and measurement tests, and rejecting and returning of unacceptable deliveries.
  • Identification of Key Inspection Points (KIP) and Mandatory Inspection Points (MIP) of sub-assemblies and integrated assemblies and liaison with Engineering and Production teams to ensure inclusion in product documentation.
  • In-process and final inspection of sub-assemblies and integrated assemblies including all related build documentation.
  • Perform inspection on outgoing deliveries (to sub-contractors and clients), ensuring that product is in line with technical and client requirements.

Quality Assurance:

  • Assist the Supply Chain team in the selection of suppliers and sub-contractors.
  • Monitor shelf-life control and ensure that timely actions are taken to minimise any impact on production and engineering processes.
  • Ensure adherence to cleanroom standards, as per the BMS requirements.
  • Responsible for the effective feedback on quality deviations to Engineering and Production teams to prevent re-occurrence and promote continuous improvement.

Quality Training:

  • Monitor and ensure the validity of the ESA certification of technicians and quality controllers.
  • Oversee ESA theoretical training (performed by external ESA trainer) and manage the practical examination in collaboration with the ESA trainer.
  • Assist the Quality Assurance Coordinator with quality induction and awareness training, where required.

Administration:

  • Responsible for the effective administration of quality control processes within the company.
  • Keeping accurate documentation and analysing trends.
  • Other ad hoc duties as required by the company.

Qualifications & Experience

Qualification:

  • Grade 12 certificate or equivalent
  • Valid IPC-A-610 or ECSS certificate (Preference will be given to aerospace and defence electronics experience)

Experience & Knowledge:

  • >5 years working experience in an electronic manufacturing industry
  • Knowledge of workmanship standards
  • Experience with soldering and conformal coating
  • 1-2 years quality control/inspection in the electronic manufacturing industry (Preference will be given to aerospace and defence electronics experience)
  • Proficient with MS Office
