The University of Cape Town is seeking an experienced space professional to provide research and academic leadership to the University’s Space Studies programme.
The senior, full-time academic professor in the field of Space Studies will provide leadership and research-led teaching in the SpaceLab and also act as the Convener of the MPhil in Space Studies Programme. The incumbent will be expected to develop and maintain ties with colleagues in the Department and Faculty to ensure that the space studies programme is fully integrated into the academic and research activities of the Department and Faculty. Particularly, close alignment between space studies and activities in radar and remote sensing. The position is being offered as a fixed-term, five-year contract post at the Associate Professor or Professor level.
The Department of Electrical Engineering has an undergraduate cohort of around 800 students and a postgraduate cohort of around 200 masters and doctoral students. The three undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Engineering degrees (Electrical Engineering; Electrical & Computer Engineering; and Mechatronics) are accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa.
The Department enjoys an international reputation for its activities in the fields of control engineering, digital electronics, image processing, instrumentation, machines and drives, microwave engineering, power electronics, mechatronics, power engineering, radar, and remote sensing, and telecommunications. Amongst other postgraduate qualifications, the department offers master’s degrees in Space Studies, Radar and Telecommunications.
Minimum requirements:
For both levels
• A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or cognate discipline with demonstrated ability to teach across a range of undergraduate electrical engineering subjects.
• A Ph.D. directly related to space science or space engineering.
• Teaching and supervision experience including post-graduate supervision to completion.
• High-level experience in a combination of space agency, industry and/or academic settings.
For appointment at Associate Professor level:
• An excellent reputation and leadership in the field, as demonstrated by publications, post-graduate supervision, and high-level professional contributions.
For appointment at Professor level:
• An outstanding reputation and leadership in the field, as demonstrated by publications, post-graduate supervision, high-level professional contributions, and international recognition.
Responsibilities
1. Teaching
• Teach appropriate undergraduate and postgraduate courses
• Supervise/co-supervise postgraduate students
2. Research
• Conceptualize, execute and publish research in the space studies field
• Mentor 4th year Undergraduate, Master’s and Doctoral students
• Develop/expand research collaborations both nationally and internationally
• Raise research funding, apply for grants from appropriate national and international funding bodies
• Obtain and maintain a National Research Foundation rating
Leadership, management, and administration
• Contribute to excellence in the operation of the Space Studies Masters Programme, by maintaining and growing the reputation of the programme
• Perform administrative functions at Departmental, Faculty and, if needed, University level
• Perform administrative functions related to teaching and research projects (i.e. convene courses, manage research teams, manage funding for research, monitor operational expenses, write progress reports, etc.
• Obtain and maintain Professional Engineering registration Social responsiveness
• Translate research findings into relevant communities
