Sequel to the pieces of information here and here, registrations have now opened for the African regionals for the 2022 Manfred Lachs Space Moot competition. Thus, interested teams can now register to participate in the annual competition.
However, the Competition is only open to teams composed of students enrolled in law schools, law faculties or law departments. In addition, the Competition is open to teams consisting of students enrolled in schools other than law. However, such a team must demonstrate in writing to the regional organiser concerned that space law or public international law forms a part of the teaching programme In addition, the letter will be upon the regional organiser’s request. Likewise, the Competition is open only to teams from educational institutions offering the following degrees; LL.B, LL.M, J.D. or equivalent degrees in law or a field related to space or public international law. Nevertheless, all determinations on eligibility are at the regional organiser’s discretion.
In addition, the teams should comprise two or three registered students. Furthermore, the students must have registered within six months before the date of their relevant regional rounds. Students eligible to compete include candidates for an LL.B, LL.M, J.D. or equivalent degree and other law students. However, candidates for S.J.D., PhD or equivalent degrees cannot compete. Similarly, students who received their first law degree, whether an LL.B, LL.M, J.D. or equivalent degree, five or more years before January 1 2021, cannot compete. About the competition
Since its inception by the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) in 1992, the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition has grown to cover five world regions. These regions include North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa. More than 60 teams participate yearly in this competition. In addition, registered teams get exclusive online access to papers of the IISL’s Colloquium Proceedings from 2005. Furthermore, regional winners receive financial support to attend the world finals.
The IISL’s Lachs competition is unique because the International Court of Justice judges preside over the World Final. The world finals competition takes place within the IISL’s annual Colloquium. The colloquium is an event in the International Astronautical Congress which holds on a different continent each year. The Lachs competition offers an unparalleled learning experience to all teams at all levels in a fair and cordial environment.
