The South African Astronomical Observatory is organising the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) workshop, which will be held on the 14th and 15th of November 2022. This year, the SALT workshop aims to address common challenges for both new and existing SALT users, including what is unique about SALT, how to propose time on SALT and set up observing blocks, and how to reduce SALT data.
The workshop will be held at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), Cape Town, with the option of joining on Zoom for those who cannot attend in person.
The workshop aims at both new and existing users of SALT and encourages students and postdocs to attend. Furthermore, SAAO will provide an overview of the telescope, instruments and observing modes, the software tools available for preparing proposals and observing blocks, and tips and tricks for reducing data and getting the most out of SALT. In addition, there will be time for hands-on practice, discussion, and the opportunity to raise any topics the participants would like to see covered. To this end, SAOO encourages participants to fill in these topics while registering for the event.
Topics include the new near-infrared instrument and reduction of near-infrared data, designing masks for multi-object spectroscopy, reducing spectro-polarimetric data, regular long-slit and MOS data, and the HRS pipeline products. Furthermore, there will be sessions on the SALT software – the proposal tools (PIPT), web manager, and instrument simulators.
