Electronic Technician
Department: Space Science

Job Description
Reporting to the Engineering and Data Acquisition Manager, the Electronic Technician will support the Space Science units in implementing technical projects requiring electronic capabilities and electronic maintenance support to the SANSA research platform.
Qualifications and Experiences
- Have a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering or a similar qualification.
- Have 3-5 years of experience in an electronics hardware environment.
- Have previous experience in PCB design and fabrication.
- Be familiar with embedded systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide support as required to all SANSA infrastructure/measuring sites.
- Perform installations and maintain instrumentation (including remote sites).
- Source and procure electronic components for unit projects.
- Work with embedded systems, including microcontrollers and IoT devices.
- Help develop and assemble custom electronic subsystems for EDA projects.
- Provide electronics support to internal and external clients.
- Training staff members and students.
2. Electronics Engineer: Antarctica (x2 posts)
Location: Hermanus, Western Cape
Department: Space Science
Contract Type: Contract (approximately 24 months)
Salary: ZAR 593,463 (USD 32,700)
Job Description
The successful candidates will be responsible for operating, maintaining, fault-finding, and repairing all equipment and experiments related to Space Weather research at the SANAE IV base. They will report to the South African National Space Agency: Hermanus. The incumbent will have to be involved in designing and implementing new equipment and commissioning, maintaining, calibrating, and modifying electronic instruments and systems, where necessary.
Applicants should be comfortable working at heights and must complete a Working at Heights course during the training period. Preference will be given to individuals with previous SANAP experience. Successful applicants will spend a few months in Hermanus from 1 June 2025 for training, then more than a full year (Dec 2025 to Feb 2027) in Antarctica. There is no option to return to South Africa before February 2027.
Qualifications and Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in Electronics/Electrical Engineering or equivalent from the University or University of Technology.
- MEng, MSc or MTech will be an added advantage.
- The incumbent should be competent in electronic maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs with proven fault-finding capabilities.
- Experience working with computers, especially with LINUX operating systems.
- Experience in programming, especially in BASH or Python, would be an advantage.
- Competent in the use of general electronics test and measurement equipment (Oscilloscope, Spectrum analyser, etc) and familiarity with the use of general workshop tools.
- The incumbent must be able to work independently with minimal support under extreme pressure and without supervision.
- The incumbent must be computer literate, have good verbal and written communication skills, and can work in a team.
- Previous SANAP experience will be an added advantage.
