The International Space Law in Context Platform (ISLC), led by Rossana Deplano and Leonardo A. López Marcos, which is hosted at the University of Leicester, has announced the upcoming seminar series “Africa’s Contribution to the Evolution of International Space Law: Legal Pathways and Emerging Opportunities,”. This event will explore Africa’s engagement with international space law, highlighting the continent’s growing role in shaping legal norms and regulatory frameworks for space activities.

As African nations continue to expand their space capabilities and engage in global initiatives, discussions surrounding their legal and institutional contributions to international legal space governance have never been more relevant. This seminar will bring together experts in space law to examine the legal frameworks guiding Africa’s space activities, as well as the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Key topics that will be discussed include;

  • The African Union’s Legal Competence and the Mandate of the African Space Agency – A review of Africa’s legal and institutional capacity to regulate space activities at the regional level and its potential to foster commercial space initiatives.
  • Legal Implications of Signing the Artemis Accords and Joining the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) – Analysing the consequences of African nations aligning with these international agreements and their role in shaping the global governance of space exploration.

Event Date: 27 February 2025 (13:00-16:00, South Africa Time Zone).

The event is virtual and open-access. Interested participants can join the meeting through his link at the specified event time.
