The African Astronomical Society (AfAS) is excited to announce the AfAS-2025 conference and general assembly, set to take place from 23 to 28 March 2025 at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Gauteng. This annual event serves as a focal point for Africa’s astronomy community, providing a platform for researchers, students, educators, and global partners to exchange ideas, collaborate, and explore future advancements in the field.
With a hybrid format, the conference will cater to both in-person and virtual attendees, ensuring broad participation. The conference programme features an array of scientific talks and discussions on the latest advancements in astronomy, outreach initiatives, and education. Special sessions will assess the progress made since the International Astronomical Union General Assembly in Cape Town (IAU-GA2024) and updates on key African astronomy projects and infrastructure development.
Topical discussions include the refurbishment of the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE) telescope in Namibia, the first telescope belonging to the African Astronomical Society. The project received funding from the AfAS, a donation of a CCD camera from the South African Astronomical Observatory and operational support from the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S) where the telescope is located.
Other interesting topics covered include machine learning and techniques, galaxy clusters, transient objects, compact objects, addressing inequality in astronomy, citizen science and amateur astronomy, interdisciplinary approaches and astronomy history, science communication, astronomy education, outreach initiatives across Africa, and astro-tourism and community development.
Election of a New Executive Committee for the next 3 years
The community will also elect a new AfAS executive committee, along with deliberations on updates to the AfAS constitution, new membership engagement strategies, and sustainability efforts for the society. Before handing over to the newly elected executive, the outgoing executive will engage with the broader community and reflect on the past 3-year’s progress.
