Environmental Officer
The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is looking to hire an Environmental Officer. The Environmental Officer (EO) will form part of the SKAO Site Management Team, reporting to the SKAO HSE Manager. The Site Environmental Officer will be based in Carnarvon, Northern Cape. The Environmental Officer will primarily be responsible for the development, implementation and management of the SARAO and its stakeholders’ Environmental policies and procedures that will ensure compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements and ISO accreditation in the Karoo.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor the Integrated Environmental Management plans;
- Conduct regular site inspections to identify and address environmental concerns;
- Develop and implement of EMS procedures and policies;
- Conducting and providing environmental awareness;
- Conducting environmental investigations; and
- Facilitating and coordinating permits, records of decisions and authorisations.
Qualification
- National Diploma in Environmental Sciences/Management;
- Registration or eligibility to register with SACNASP and/ or EAPASA (advantageous); and
- Three years of experience as an environmental officer working in construction and operational environments.
Experience
- Relevant environmental policies, legislation, guidelines, and standards are pre-request;
- Proven experience in the implementation and maintenance of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System;
- Experience implementing and managing various projects ;
- Proven and relevant exposure to environmental management and legal compliance;
- Proven experience in environmental sustainability; and
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
Knowledge
- Relevant environmental policies, legislation, guidelines and standards is a pre-request;
- Tools/software relevant to the Environment;
- Sound technical knowledge of risk assessment and evaluation, environmental management tools, programmes and systems; and

Environmental Specialist
SARAO has an opening for an Environmental Specialist to join its team on a permanent contract. The successful candidate will form part of the operations team and report to the Senior SHEQ Consultant during the construction and operations of activities at all different sites. The candidate will be primarily responsible for the development, implementation, tracking, and compliance of Environmental Management plans, reports, policies, and procedures for all sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement an Environmental Management Plan, policies and procedures for all sites;
- Ensure organisational compliance with environmental legislation, policies, plans and construction licenses in South Africa;
- Developing Key Performance Indicators and track targets for Sustainability for all sites in line with United Nations Sustainability Goals;
- Implement programmes associated with these KPIs and report operational performance to the EXCO and the National Research Foundation. (This includes water consumption and conservation, energy usage, and waste management, amongst others);
- Act as the Sustainability Champion and gather staff input to identify sustainability activities and new initiatives that are already underway;
- Developing, implementing and updating the Environmental Legal Register in compliance with the IEMP;
- Developing the required documentation to establish an Environmental Management System (EMS) for SARAO to obtain ISO14001 accreditation and ongoing implementation of the EMS to maintain ISO accreditation;
- Monitoring and reporting on measurable environmental impacts;
- Develop and implement ongoing environmental and sustainability awareness material and implement environmental training for staff and contractors;
- Provide monthly dashboard reports to the EXCO on the environment, construction license compliance and updates on the achievement of Environment and Sustainability KPIs; and
- Guide the Environmental Officer and Operations and Project Management Teams and coordinate activities.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science or Management with a minimum of eight years of construction experience;
- Honours Degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Management in a similar role with a minimum of six years of construction experience; or
- Registration with a legally recognised professional organisation such as the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) or the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA).
Experience
- Proven knowledge and experience of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and regulations;
- Proven knowledge of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act;
- Proven knowledge and experience of environmental aspects, hazard identification, and risk management processes;
- Proven knowledge in developing key performance indicators for the environment and sustainability;
- Sound knowledge of environmental incident investigation processes and their causation phenomena;
- Knowledge and experience in the development and/or implementation of environmental management systems;
- Knowledge and experience of environmental auditing as per ISO 14001 standards;
- Environmental Auditing and inspection training;
- Experience in building strong people relationships, general management practices and experience in managing and leading contractor environmental teams;
- Extensive knowledge and interpretation of SHEQ Management Systems, procedures and policies, including document control; and
- Ability and willingness to travel to the SARAO Site in the Karoo frequently.
Knowledge
- Excellent interpersonal skills and influencing skills;

- Familiarity with the formalism for and requirements of quality control environments such as ISO9001, 14001 and 45001;

Science Regional Centre (SRC) Lead
This is a permanent contract. The successful applicant will lead the development and establishment of the SARAO high-performance compute facility from concept to commissioning and operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Overall responsibility for the development of the South African SRC;
- Lead the engagement with national stakeholders and partners and provide the vision and direction for the development of the ZASRC;
- Participate in the international SRC Steering Committee work programme and ultimately lead the South African participation in international SRC planning and operations;
- Develop and implement a resource plan to ensure ZASRC Program milestones and deliverables; and
- Lead technology development data-intensive R&D platforms.
Qualification
- A Masters degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Business or related applied sciences.
