The GMES and Africa programme brings together experts from the MarCNoWA (University of Ghana) and the MarCOSIO consortium (CSIR and CORDIO East Africa) for a three-day course titled “Earth Observation for Coral Reef Resilience – Ecology, Threats, and Monitoring.” The training is tailored for stakeholders in Egypt and aims to foster knowledge transfer between the Southern and Indian Ocean regions and North Africa. The course will focus on coral reef resilience, ecology, threats, and satellite-based monitoring techniques as part of the cross-fertilisation activities.

Course Objective

The course seeks to extend best practices and deepen understanding of coral reef ecosystems through Earth Observation (EO) technologies, focusing on using satellite data to monitor and preserve coral reefs in vulnerable regions.

Participant Requirements

Participants are expected to have access to a personal computer with a reliable internet connection for the duration of the training. All sessions will be recorded, and recordings and slides will be shared with participants afterwards. No additional software installations are needed—an internet browser is sufficient for accessing the course material.

Platform Registrations

The course will utilise several online platforms to explore satellite data products. Participants are encouraged to register for the following platforms by 12 November 2024 to streamline their participation during the practical sessions:

1. Copernicus Marine Service

Provides free access to marine data for scientific, environmental, and economic purposes.

  • Registration: Please sign up here by clicking the “REGISTER” button on the top-right of the homepage.

2. DUNIA Platform

The EO Africa Dunia platform offers an intuitive interface for exploring and analysing Earth Observation data without installing software. It also supports mobile access.

  • Registration**: You can sign up here by clicking the “Sign Up” button at the top-right of the homepage.

Speakers

  1. Dr Marie Smith – Senior Researcher, MARCOSIO – CSIR
  2. James Mbugua – GIS Specialist & Project Manager, MARCOSIO – CORDIO East Africa
  3. Dr Karin Moejes – Senior Scientist, CORDIO
  4. Swaleh Aboud – Researcher, CORDIO East Africa
  5. Ignatius Kweku Williams – Training Officer, GMES-UG
