The African Astronomical Society (AfAS) annual conference has been moved from a physical conference to a fully virtual conference, AfAS has revealed.
The Executive committee of the African Astronomical Society (AfAS) resolved that the AfAS Annual Conference will be held as a fully virtual meeting from the 8th-12th March 2021. This is due to the fact that South Africa is officially in the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and the situation around hosting of events, travel and other restrictions remain uncertain.
In the proposed virtual format, the conference will be limited to between 5 and 6 hours a day.
AfAS have commenced with planning for the scientific programme and the SOC has decided that, in addition to allowing the original presenters to confirm their availability for this event, a new Call should be issued for additional presenters. Abstracts for the Conference will be considered in the following tracks:
- Scientific;
- Education, Development and Outreach.
The new call is necessary as the digital platform will allow for those who wish to present but could not travel for the physical meeting. Anyone interested in giving a talk in March 2021, should submit a brief abstract (Maximum 1500 Characters) on the presentation which the SOC will consider; the closing date for the submission of the abstracts is 25th January.
