The African Network of Women in Astronomy (AfNWA), a sub-committee of the African Astronomical Society (AfAS), in collaboration with the International Science Programme (ISP), Uppsala University, Sweden, is delighted to invite nominations for the 2023 Women in Astronomy in Africa awards. The award aims to recognise and support the scientific achievements and contributions to the society of women in Astronomy in Africa.
This year, two awards will be conferred: the Professor Carolina Odman-Govender Early Career Award and the AfNWA Senior Award. The award will include an award certificate to be presented during the next general meeting of the African Astronomical Society in Morocco (April 2024) and EUR 1500. In Addition, both awardees will have the opportunity to deliver their presentations during the AfAS annual meeting in Marrakech.

AFNWA Call for Seed Grant in Support of Projects Focus on Empowering Girls From Disadvantaged Communities
The African Network of Women in Astronomy (AfNWA), in collaboration with the AfAS Education and Outreach Committee, has announced a call for seed funding to support outreach initiatives throughout Africa, particularly on outreach projects focused on leveraging astronomy and STEM to empower girls living in underprivileged communities.
Seed grants are available to aid African outreach endeavours, specifically targeting girls’ empowerment in disadvantaged circumstances. These initiatives aim to utilise astronomy and STEM education, benefiting girls residing in challenging environments such as areas affected by conflicts, remote regions, rural areas, non-formal settlements, refugee camps, International Development Programme (IDP) settlements, out-of-school girls, underage mothers, and similar situations.
Benefit
Applicants will receive between EUR 250 – 300 per project.
