The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has the following research opportunity within the Space Science Programme situated in Hermanus, Western Cape. SANSA forms part of the worldwide network of magnetic observatories, undertakes fundamental and applied Space Science research, maintains the infrastructure required to monitor the near-Earth space environment, and provides space weather and other applied science services. The opportunity exists within the Operational Space Weather Services Unit.

A visiting researcher is required to join the SANSA space weather project team for a period of 4.5 months (1 August 2019 – 15 December 2019).

The researcher should have:

  • A Doctoral Degree in Space Physics or related to specialisation in any aspect of the space environment.
  • A publication track record in the space physics and/or space weather field; ‐
  • Experience in an operational space weather environment or in a research institute that supports operational space weather modelling.
  • Experience in providing space weather services, expertise on advising aviation users, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) or related industries would be advantageous.
  • Experience in the impacts of radiation exposure at aviation altitudes would be advantageous.

SANSA will cover all travel to South Africa, accommodation in Hermanus, and local travel related to the requirements. A basic honorarium will be paid to the researcher. The researcher will be responsible for his/her own travel and\or medical insurance as well as any visa requirements that may be applicable.

Note that this is not a permanent employment arrangement, and the successful researcher will need to demonstrate home institution support that allows for this opportunity to be taken up.

  • The researcher will be required to participate in the project as follows.
  • Attend space weather project team meetings and participate in project discussions related to the delivery of space weather services to the aviation sector.
  • Undertake space weather-related research.
  • Undertake some outreach and awareness activities including explaining concepts of space weather impacts to members of the public, government, and users.
  • Attend user engagement meetings as required.
