The annual Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Symposium 2023 will hold a physical event themed “Stand out in the crowd: GEO Work Programme for Nature, People, and Planet”, between 13-14 June 2023, in Geneva, Switzerland. The symposium will enable the GEO Work Programme community to encourage exchanging expertise and advancing collaboration between partners for continuous growth.
Participants and speakers will leverage the symposium’s previous successes to propel equitable access to Earth Observation data globally and foster the exchange of socioeconomic-related insights for rapid development.
Furthermore, the Open Data and Open Knowledge Workshop will be held after the symposium.
Objectives of the GEO Symposium 2023
- Support the development of the Ministerial Declaration and Post 2025 Strategy.
- Advance collaborations on the GEO Work Programme by providing integrated, innovative, and co-designed products and services.
- Provide the GEO Work Programme community with opportunities to showcase their work and network with each other.
Programme Details
Interactive Dialogues
Leaders of the GEO Work Programme will work with the Post-2025 Working Group members, Programme Board members, users and partners, and other key stakeholders to have interactive dialogues about the GEO Post-2025 strategy and the GEO Work Programme. Each interactive discussion will feature a panel session and explore a vital topic of the post-2025 strategy.
Thematic sessions
GEO Work Programme activities will contribute to the following discussion on collaborative efforts:
- Biodiversity and Nature: In this session, GEO’s efforts to create the world’s first Global Ecosystem Atlas will be examined by showcasing a few illustrative applications;
- Urban Resilience for Heat and Health: The session will describe GEO’s plans to develop an integrated heat and health service built upon state-of-the-art Earth observations for urban resilience against climate change.
- Multi-Hazard Risks and Impact via the GEO Work Programme: Through this session, the GEO Work Programme activities focused on systemic risks will discuss how, why and where GEO is best positioned to deliver impact for countries and local communities.
- Operational services via the GEO Work Programme: This session will aim to unpack the critical characteristics of practical assistance from the perspective of users and partners and identify challenges and opportunities for the GEO Work Programme activities to become more functional and focused.
Flash Talks
GEO Work Programme activities will speak for 5 minutes each using a maximum of three slides on the following topics:
- Enablers for scaling the impact of the GEO Work Programme; and
- Mobilising resources for the GEO Work Programme.

The Open Data and Open Knowledge Workshop
The Data Working Group, in collaboration with the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) Platform and the GEO Knowledge Hub teams, are hosting a two-day Open Data and Open Knowledge workshop between 15-16 June 2023 at WMO Building – 7bis avenue de la Paix, Geneva, Switzerland.
The workshop will enable the GEO community to explore technical accomplishments, challenges, and solutions and allow all GEO Work Programme activities to embrace open knowledge practices.
Objectives of the Open Data and Open Knowledge Workshop 2023
- Highlight the ongoing efforts of the GEO Community towards open and reproducible knowledge;
- Support open science – citizen science, crowdsourcing;
- Empower all users to access and use open EO-based applications in the various engagement priorities and main conventions;
- Promote open knowledge applications to the youth community, as well as to less represented communities;
- Align the GEO community and its activities with the open and reproducible knowledge vision;
- Use open EO in situ data and EO-space-based data and knowledge of international policy frameworks;
- Explore and discuss technological advances that facilitate the implementation of open knowledge;
- Provide data & knowledge providers with an opportunity to meet users working on GEO engagement priorities;
- Discuss with GWP activities EO data gaps (VHR Space-based EO Data- In situ), knowledge gaps, and needs;
- Discuss gaps and needs versus statistical data to support the development of knowledge-based products; and
- Align and update on technological aspects of GEO infrastructure.
