The Global Monitoring for Environment and Security and Africa (GMES & Africa) is organising a two-day workshop to take stock of the state-of-play of access to Copernicus Sentinel data and service information by African institutions including in the context of GMES and Africa Programme.

Access to data is a critical element for application development, and it may need to evolve to satisfy user demands. On the 12th of June 2018, a cooperation arrangement was signed in Brussels between the European Commission and the African Union Commission to facilitate access to Copernicus data and information.

The workshop’s objective is to collect African institutions’ views on the present and potential developments of Copernicus data and information access, particularly regarding existing challenges, evolving technologies and future needs.

The expected outcomes are:

  • Inventory of the data and information needs;
  • Identification of the current data and information access bottlenecks and challenges; and
  • Definition of potential technical solutions and a roadmap for improving the current data and information access conditions.

Furthermore, the workshop is addressed to African institutions, universities or private companies with existing experience or interest in accessing Copernicus data and information, as well as partner organisations involved in the digital transformation in Africa.
