WASCAL (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use) is a large-scale research-focused Climate Service Centre designed to help tackle this challenge and thereby enhance the resilience of human and environmental systems to climate change and increased variability. It does so by strengthening the research infrastructure and capacity in West Africa related to climate change and by pooling the expertise of ten West African countries and Germany.
Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), WASCAL is implemented in a collaborative effort by West African and German partners.
The Competence Centre, a newly established institute in West Africa, carries out research and provides science-based advice to policymakers and stakeholders on climate change impacts, mitigation, and adaptation measures. The Core Research Programme complements the scientific activities of the Competence Center and is implemented by a network of German and West African research institutes. The Graduate Studies Programme, involving the creation of ten graduate schools in West Africa, contributes to the education of the next generation of African scientists and policymakers in the field of climate change and land management.
WASCAL member countries include Germany, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo and the ECOWAS.
There is an ongoing call for application to WASCAL climate Masters program in Cabo Verde & Burkina Faso.

The Technical University of Atlantic is pleased to call for application for its Master’s programme on Climate Change & Marine Sciences (MP-CCMS) under the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL). The Master’s programme on Climate Change & Marine Sciences of the Technical University of Atlantic is implemented in close partnership with the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, the University of Kiel and the Thünen Institute, as German partner institutions and with the Institute of Sea (IMAR) as the Cabo Verdean partner institution.
This consortium is well suited to provide needed scientific and academic skills in climate, marine sciences and management, both on an international and regional level in West Africa, in a climate change context. The proposed Master´s programme will adequately prepare West African students for subsequent post-graduate studies or professional careers as managers or experts in the industry, consultancy, governmental agencies, etc. Through the present call, the Technical University of Atlantic is launching its second Master’s programme on Climate Change & Marine Sciences for the 2020-2021 academic year and scholarship possibilities for at least 11 of the 22 selected students.
The UNIVERSITE JOSEPH KI-ZERBO, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, is pleased to announce for application for its second batch of students to the study of Master Research Programme in Informatics for Climate Change (MRP-INFORMCC) in Burkina Faso under the Capacity Building Programme of West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), with funding from the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
The Master Research Programme in Informatics for Climate Change (MRP-INFORMCC) is implemented at the Université Joseph KI-ZERBO (Burkina Faso) in partnership with the University of Würzburg (Germany). MRP-INFORMCC is aimed at training a critical mass of experts with adequate scientific computation and climate data management skills in West Africa. This Master programme includes all aspect of data management and administration of high-performance computing facility that will be used to run regional climate models and its auxiliaries for operational and research institutions and universities in West Africa. The student will be exposed to interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches to climate data analysis and management skills as well as operations and maintenance of HPC systems.
