The European Space Agency (ESA) and the African Union Commission (AUC) are offering four PhD and Masters holders with extensive research experience in Earth Observation (EO) activities relevant to the EO Africa initiative. The one-year fellowship will be provided to four African researchers to work at the ESA-ESRIN premises in Frascati (Rome, Italy) in collaboration with ESA’s scientists.

The research fellowship programme aims to create an African framework for research, innovation, communities and application building in the African-European Research and Development (R&D) partnership. Additionally, it seeks to facilitate the adoption of EO  and related space technology in Africa. This fellowship is premised on the 10-year vision for the emergent digital area in Africa. To this end, researchers must bring innovative, reliable, evidence-based solutions to exploring EO data. This will enable policymakers and civil society to address social, environmental and economic policies.

Research and development activities will focus on major African challenges by filling in knowledge gaps to support the Africa and global environmental and developmental agenda. In addition, there will be a focus on extending ICT capabilities to maximise the use of available EO data across the continent. The open science approach will share data, results and knowledge. These are at the core of the value chain.

Candidates will be expected to produce a one-year research and development proposal on water resource management and food security issues. Researchers will be expected to cover smallholder needs and coastal practices. The activity will be coordinated and aligned with the EO AFRICA R&D Initiative, which provides training opportunities and scientific tools for the selected African research fellows. The EO AFRICA Space Academy and its Digital Campus will give access to a wide range of expertise and knowledge to be shared with research fellows. In addition, the EO AFRICA Innovation Lab will allow the African research fellows to collaborate directly with European scientists and implement their research ideas.
