UNISA Announces 5 Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunities in Astronomy & SKA Niche Area

The University of South Africa (UNISA), through the Astronomy and Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Catalytic Niche Area in its College of Science, Engineering and Technology, is inviting applications for five (5) postdoctoral fellowship positions in Astronomy. These prestigious fellowships are funded under UNISA’s Astronomy Flagship Programme and will run for a three-year period, with each fellow receiving ZAR 360,000 (~USD 19,846) per annum.

About the Programme

Members of the niche area at UNISA are engaged in cutting-edge research using globally recognised astronomical facilities such as:

  1. Southern African Large Telescope (SALT)
  2. HartRAO 26m Telescope
  3. MeerKAT
  4. Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimeter Array (ALMA)
  5. European VLBI Network (EVN)
  6. e-MERLIN
  7. East-Asian VLBI Network (EAVN)

The group also actively collaborates on major global initiatives, including:

  1. The HESS Project
  2. MeerKAT Legacy Surveys
  3. Maser Monitoring Organisation
  4. SETI project at the University of California, Berkeley
  5. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project

Research Focus Areas

Successful candidates will be expected to undertake collaborative research with the team in the following thematic areas:

  1. Interferometric data processing
  2. Maser theory and observational studies
  3. Star formation and star clusters
  4. Galaxy evolution and galaxy clusters
  5. Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI)
  6. Machine learning applications in radio data interpretation

Additional responsibilities will include co-supervising postgraduate students and participating in astronomy outreach activities.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have obtained a PhD in Astronomy or Astrophysics within the last five years.
