The Centre for Space Research at North-West University (NWU), Potchefstroom, South Africa, is seeking outstanding candidates to fill two senior postdoctoral fellowship positions in high-energy astrophysics. The appointments are initially for one year, and renewable for up to five years, depending on satisfactory performance.
The research activities of the two positions should focus on observational or theoretical high-energy and multi-messenger astrophysics. One of the successful candidates will work with Prof. Markus Boettcher, with a focus on extragalactic multi-wavelength/multi-messenger astrophysics. The other will work with Prof. Christo Venter on the modelling of broadband pulsar and pulsar wind nebula (PWN) emission, as well as observational/theoretical work on pulsars and fast radio bursts (FRBs).
The institutional expectations for these prize postdoctoral fellowships include:
- publication of at least 4 refereed journal papers per year;
- Co-supervision of at least 1 M.Sc. or PhD student per year;
- Participation in grant proposal writing – at least one submission per year;
- A moderate amount of participation in administration.
The annual salary will be ZAR 438 000. (which is significantly higher than a usual postdoc salary in South Africa and will be income-tax-free).
Key Requirement
A PhD in astronomy/astrophysics or a closely related field is required, and prior postdoctoral experience is highly desirable.
