The Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM) mentorship programme is an initiative created by the GPM Applications Team in collaboration with the University of Coimbra to support new users from established and underrepresented communities and provide tailored hands-on learning experiences using GPM to solve scientific and societal challenges.

After completing the first and second, the third edition of the GPM mentorship will connect participants worldwide with subject matter experts from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Texas A&M, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Coimbra and other key organisations for comprehensive training on precipitation estimates and Earth Observation.

In addition, this free training will include a blend of theoretical understanding through lecture series and practical training in the form of a capstone project, covering various precipitation-related topics, including Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM, Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar, ground validation, data discovery, and more.

Key Dates and Information
  1. Registration starts: February 2, 2024
  2. Registration deadline: March 11, 2024
  3. Lecture series dates: March 13, 20, 27, and April 3, 2024.
  4. Capstone starts (for selected participants): April 3, 2024.
  5. Final session: June 5, 2024.
Methods of Selection

Registration will require the submission of a short CV (50% of the score) and a motivation letter (50% of the score). The organisers will give preference to graduate students and early-career scientists with demonstrable ability and interest in applying new skills to solve ‘real-world’ problems. Furthermore, the organisers strongly encourage members of development and meteorological agencies to apply.

Similarly, 50% of the seats will be assigned preferentially to participants from lower and middle-lower-income countries according to the list made available by the World Bank (check the list of countries here). Please notice that if you are from one of NASA’s designated countries (see the list here), unfortunately, you will not be able to participate in the capstone project portion of the programme. However, you may still participate in the lecture series.
