AfriGEO, an African initiative under the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), is pleased to announce the 9th AfriGEO Symposium, co-hosted by the Centre de Suivi Écologique (CSE) in Senegal. This year’s event will be held under the theme “From Data to Impact: Strengthening Africa’s Geospatial Future.”

AfriGEO serves as a coordination framework for Africa’s collective engagement in GEO, supporting the continent’s contribution to the development of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). It brings together 33 African GEO member states and over 15 regional institutions, collectively forming the African Caucus.

Why Attend?

The AfriGEO Symposium is the premier continental platform for:

  1. Policy-makers, researchers, governments, academia, and industry to exchange insights.
  2. Showcasing Earth Observation (EO) technologies and their real-world applications.
  3. Enhancing the Africa Union Space Policy, adopted in January 2016.
  4. Facilitating strategic partnerships and promoting user-driven EO innovations for societal benefit.

Building on the outcomes of the 7th Symposium (Swakopmund, Namibia) and the 8th Symposium (Nairobi, Kenya), the 9th edition in Senegal will advance the conversation around geospatial technologies for Africa’s development.

Symposium Goals

  1. Strengthen Open Data Access: Advance policy support for free, accessible, and usable EO data across sectors.
  2. Transform Data into Insights: Showcase EO applications contributing to climate resilience, food security, urban planning, and disaster preparedness.
  3. Promote Regional and Global Collaboration: Reinforce networks like AfriGEO and GEO through shared infrastructure and expertise.
  4. Embrace Technological Innovation: Highlight the role of AI, cloud computing, and big data in closing the digital divide.
  5. Empower the Next Generation: Invest in education, capacity building, and inclusive development to ensure EO benefits all Africans, particularly youth and marginalised communities.
