SANSA Opens Multiple Positions in Earth Observation Programme Team

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) seeks qualified candidates to fill several key positions within its Earth Observation programme. SANSA, mandated by South African law, promotes developing and applying space technologies while fostering international cooperation in space-related activities.  

Under the Department of Science and Innovation, SANSA advances space research, strengthens Earth observation capabilities, and supports industrial development in space technologies in line with national policy objectives.

Available Positions

  1. Research, Applications, and Development (RAD) Manager

Reporting to: Executive Director, Earth Observation  

The successful candidate will lead the development, implementation, and management of innovative Earth Observation (EO) research projects and space intelligence tools. This role focuses on developing cutting-edge EO applications for agriculture, disaster management, environmental monitoring, and urban planning sectors. The incumbent will also mentor teams, establish strategic partnerships, and ensure the delivery of scalable and impactful EO solutions.  

Qualifications & Experience 
  • Minimum PhD in Remote Sensing, Geospatial Science, Earth Sciences, Computer Science, or a related field.  
  • Minimum of five (5) years of senior-level experience in EO applications, space intelligence tools, or geospatial research.  
  • At least three (3) years in a management role.  
  • Strong publication record in remote sensing scientific journals and conferences.  
  • Experience with EO data processing, AI-powered applications, and business management processes.  
  • Due to the specialised and technical nature of the environment and the need for good leadership, the position requires a scarce combination of remote sensing, GIS, research and leadership/management skills.
Key Responsibilities  
  • Lead EO research and intelligence tool development.  
  • Oversee AI-powered EO applications for climate monitoring, agriculture, and disaster response.  
  • Manage multiple EO projects, ensuring research outputs translate into real-world applications.  
  • Establish partnerships with government, industry, and international institutions.  
  • Oversee financial and procurement management for EO projects.  
  1. Principal Scientist

Reporting to: Research, Applications, and Development (RAD) Manager  

This role provides scientific leadership and drives research in Earth Observation, advancing SANSA’s capabilities in remote sensing and geospatial applications. The Principal Scientist will lead multidisciplinary teams, secure research funding, and translate scientific outputs into practical solutions.  

Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum PhD in Remote Sensing, Geospatial Science, Earth Sciences, Computer Science, or a related field.  
  • At least five (5) years of experience in EO applications, space intelligence tools, or geospatial research.  
  • Minimum of two (2) years in a senior scientist role.  
  • Strong publication record in remote sensing journals and conferences.  
  • Proven ability to lead and supervise scientific teams.  
  • Experience in remote sensing processing supply chains.
  • Insight into requirements of the EO Space Intelligence environment.
  • Understanding of business management processes.
Key Responsibilities  
  • Lead research teams in EO applications and innovation.  
  • Develop advanced EO methodologies, tools, and frameworks.  
  • Publish high-impact research and technical reports.  
  • Manage multiple EO projects and ensure compliance with international standards.  
  • Engage with stakeholders, including government, industry, and academia.  
  • Mentor postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers.  
  1. Business Development Practitioner

Reporting to: Executive Director, Earth Observation  

The successful candidate will drive the growth and commercialisation of SANSA’s EO programme by identifying market opportunities, developing partnerships, and supporting the expansion of EO services across various sectors.  

Qualifications & Experience  
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Geospatial Science, Earth Sciences, or a related field.  
  • At least five (5) years of experience in business development, preferably in the scientific or geospatial sector.  
  • Proven experience in stakeholder engagement, marketing, proposal writing, and contract negotiations.  
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.  
  • Strategic thinking with the ability to identify and leverage market opportunities.
  • Familiarity with EO technologies is an advantage.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and customer relationship management (CRM) software
Key Responsibilities  
  • Develop and execute a business development strategy for EO services.  
  • Identify new revenue opportunities and partnerships.  
  • Lead marketing initiatives and proposal development.  
  • Represent SANSA’s EO programme at conferences and industry events.
