Simera Sense is hiring a Senior Thermal Engineer and a Senior Structural Engineer. The positions are full-time and are in Somerset, West, South Africa.
Senior Structural Engineer
The applicant will be responsible for the structural design, analysis and testing of electro-optical imaging systems for spaceborne applications. The successful candidate will also act as the Lead Structural Engineer, thus guiding other structural engineers and establishing and maintaining the company’s structural analysis and testing procedures.
The position requires the ability to merge numerous multi-physics design requirements into a single instrument and subsequently collaborate with optical and optomechanical engineers. Previous experience designing and analysing complex mechanical structures is a must, with high attention to detail and a passion for success. The successful candidate can expect to be immersed in a fast-paced and challenging technical environment that allows pushing the boundaries.
Key Responsibilities
- Generate design requirements and perform the detailed design of high-precision optomechanical systems for space-borne applications;
- Perform detailed structural analyses of optomechanical systems (for space-borne applications);
- Utilise software tools for finite element analysis and structural-optical interaction;
- Act as a lead structural engineer managing the company’s structural analysis procedures and providing guidance to junior structural engineers;
- Manage and perform the qualification testing of newly developed systems;
- Generate and maintain technical documentation such as design documents, test procedures, and reports; and
- Providing technical support to clients for all structurally related queries.
Required Skills
- 5 – 10+ years of engineering experience, preferably in the space domain;
- Experienced in mechanical design and conducting finite element analysis (previous experience using NX Nastran is advantageous but not a requirement);
- Advanced technical knowledge of static and dynamic analyses, as well as a thorough understanding of engineering principles and best practices;
- Experienced in guiding space structures through the development phases from requirements generation through to manufacturing, qualification and testing as per the applicable standards (ECSS and GEVS);
- Previous experience in finite element model correlation and results verification through testing (vibration, modal, shock);
- High proficiency in verbal and written communication;
- High attention to detail with the ability to execute tasks accurately and timely;
- Willingness to share expertise and train other employees;
- Proactive approach to taking ownership of the relevant technical domain within the company;
- Experienced in optical/optomechanical systems; and
- Experienced with Siemens Teamcenter and NX software;
Required Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optomechanical Engineering or related

Senior Thermal Engineer
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Senior Thermal Engineer and be tasked to assist with the design, simulation and testing of thermal solutions related to electro-optical imaging systems for use in space-borne applications such as cubesats. The successful candidate must merge numerous multi-physics design requirements into a single design solution while collaborating with optomechanical, thermal and electronic engineers.
Furthermore, previous experience designing optomechanical or thermal systems is advantageous; however, high attention to detail and a passion for success are necessary. The successful candidate can expect to be immersed in a fast-paced and challenging technical environment which offers the opportunity to push the boundaries of what is achievable with optical payloads in the cubesat domain.
Responsibilities
- Create detailed thermal design solutions for electro-optical and optomechanical systems;
- Perform numerical thermal analysis of the designs using class-leading thermal software;
- Create detailed design drawings and manage the manufacturing of the components performed by external suppliers;
- Research and select COTS/custom materials and components as required by design;
- Assist with designing, integrating, and commissioning thermal test equipment;
- Assist with performing thermal model correlation tests and conducting performance verification testing of electro-optical systems using the equipment in the thermal test facility;
- Generate technical documentation such as design documents, test procedures, and reports; and
- Complete general tasks related to mechanical engineering as required.
Required Skills
- Experienced in thermal design and analysis, or as a minimum, in mechanical design and analysis (finite element modelling) is a must;
- Proficient in finite element analysis and able to interpret results for design improvement;
- Experience working with CAD and generating detailed mechanical drawings;
- Proficient in generating technical design and test documentation;
- Experience in guiding a conceptual design through the development phases from requirements generation through to production, qualification and testing;
- Experience with test and measurement of mechanical and thermal systems;
- High attention to detail with the ability to execute tasks accurately and in a timely fashion;
- Experience in designing optomechanical/thermal systems for space-borne applications is advantageous; and
- Knowledge of Siemens Teamcenter and NX software is advantageous.
Required Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optomechanical Engineering or related.
