The European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellite (EUMETSAT) in close association with the African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD), is organising its second Webinar, following its webinar on MTG in Africa on March 31st 2021. It is among a series of three Webinars organised to inform stakeholders (users, decision-makers, partner institutions, etc.) about access and exploitation of satellite data operated by EUMETSAT to support sustainable development in Africa.
Africa is the most susceptible continent to climate change, and the frequency of natural disasters is only increasing, leading to high economic losses. Some of the world’s most vulnerable groups (refugees, women, children, etc.) face some of the worst effects of climate change. Therefore, it is vital for governments and decision-makers in Africa to define and implement appropriate mitigation and adaptation policies. These include a better understanding of climate change and its impact, and also investment policies for extensive infrastructure with long lifecycles.
The definition and implementation of policies consequently require the development of science-based climate services to combat climate change. Climate services are based on the combination of a long series of well-calibrated observations, numerical models capable of delivering climate prediction on seasonal to decadal scales and projections on longer scales (in response to emission scenarios), and socio-economic data. Thus, they can act as a catalyst for the continent to move away from poverty and minimise disaster risk.
Objectives of the Webinar
The webinar aims to increase awareness of the role of the EUMETSAT satellite in monitoring the climate in Africa. It will inform and interact with stakeholders on climate monitoring from space for Africa. Furthermore, It will demonstrate how EUMETSAT satellite data is pertinent for the Green transition and Paris Agreement in Africa. Finally, it will also inform users about the access to climate data generated by EUMETSAT and get feedback from their experiences.
Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of the webinar are:
- Highlight the socioeconomic benefits of space-based climate observations;
- Share user experiences with EUMETSAT climate products; and
- Inform African users about available services, training and future possibilities.
Details of the WebinarÂ
The Webinar will hold on the 7th, and 8th of June 2021 from 8 am-10 am (UTC). It will consist of two parts. The first part will take place Monday, 7th of June and will inform current and potential users about the data, tools and training related to space-based climate monitoring.
The second session will hold on Tuesday, 8 June. It will be dedicated to institutional decision-makers, donors and partner institutions. The session will also aim at showing the benefits of climate monitoring from space. It will consist of several user-case presentations and a panel discussion/roundtable (e.g. The socioeconomic impact of the climate monitoring from space in support of the Paris Agreement in Africa, the AU Agenda 2063 and the Green Transition Agenda).
