Launched in December 2008, SA-CERN is a national programme funded by the Department of Science and Innovation and the NRF. Its mission is to advance South Africa’s physics capabilities through collaboration with CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, located between Switzerland and France.
One of SA-CERN’s most notable contributions was the discovery of the Higgs-Boson particle in July 2012. This groundbreaking achievement involved over 3,000 physicists from 183 institutions across 38 countries, including South Africa and other African nations.
