SANSA is Hiring a Space Weather Forecaster

The South African National Space Agency has an open position within its Space Science Programme for a Space Weather Forecaster on a two-year contract at its Hermanus, Western Cape office.

Working day and night shifts, the successful applicant will report to the Head of Space Weather and provide space weather forecasting and prediction services as a customer demand service within SANSA’s suite of products and services. The forecasting and prediction services are delivered as part of SANSA’s operational space weather centre, which is a 24/7 monitoring and control environment.

Responsibilities

  1. Monitor and issue space weather forecasts,
  2. Provide space weather forecasting services to all clients who may require them,
  3. Promote the SANSA brand within the region at various organised activities such as presentations and exhibitions,
  4. Publish space weather-related reports related to the improvement of space weather processes and process elements, where necessary,
  5. Assist with Trend forecasts and verification,
  6. Manage troubleshooting and complex problem-solving of technical problems, and
  7. Provide support for activities such as forecast briefings, monthly operating reviews, product development and testing, and client onboarding.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications for a level 1 forecaster:

  1. BSc Honours in Meteorology & Climate Science, Space Science, or Physics,
  2. A post-graduate certificate in forecasting is advantageous,
  3. Knowledge of space weather forecasting methodology,
  4. 1 – 2 years of weather-related forecasting would be an advantage.

Minimum qualifications for a level 2 forecaster:

  1. MSc. in Space Science, Meteorology & Climate Science, Physics, Physics & Mathematics, Physics & Computer Science or Physics & Statistics,
  2. A post-graduate certificate in forecasting is advantageous,
  3. Knowledge of space weather forecasting methodology,
  4. 1 – 2 years of weather-related forecasting would be an advantage.

Additional Requirements

  • Drive, ambition and energy are essential,
  • Inter-personal skills such as the ability to engage with stakeholders at various levels and manage customer queries,
  • Initiative and attention to detail,
  • Understanding of a customer-centric approach,
  • IMot to develop their skills and be passionate about science applications and
  • Willingness to be vetted for security clearance
